It was pretty awful. I highly recommend not sitting by the side door because I think a lot of people there get targeted since it's easy to grab their stuff and run out the side/back door. Just keep your wits about you; it's all you can do.

omg! What a horrible story! Just seeing a cell phone taken away in front of me was scary enough. I couldn't imagine how I would feel if the incident had escalated to this.

How terrifying!!! I cannot even begin to imagine going through something like that. What a shame that the bus driver did not work to help a little. I'm sorry you had to go through this experience.

I couldn't read the letter because it just fills me with such rage and sadness as if it happened yesterday. However, thinking about that incident does remind me that there are good people out there like Unknown Papi (does he even have that title?) and makes me grateful to call him my friend.

For all those who asked, I did get a response from the Mayor's office and from MUNI (Municipal Transportation Agency), but nothing satisfactory. All I got was, "we're sorry this happened; we'll look into it." I doubt the driver ever suffered any consequences.

Yikes … I'm getting shaky just reading that! I hope that driver got punished somehow. Seriously. They must go through training for that kind of situation. I'm so glad you guys survived (seems like it could have gone another way easily). How scary. But the good thing is knowing that your man is a true hero. Rare these days.

I love that idiom…I am amazed everyday what people value. What brass balls people have to just TAKE what isn't thiers.He did the right thing, and it's too bad that he has so many medical issues from it. Did he at least get some kind of reward? Did the mayor respond?

I lived in SF for 6 years and was lucky to have never have had this experience. After reading this…I was left shaken and almost in tears. How scary!! I'm glad you are both ok and have moved on from this situation. You husband sounds like a great man. Big hugs!

Wow, that is a scary story. I'm so sorry you had to go through that but I do admire you for writing a letter about it. Did anybody ever follow up with you? Unknown Papi is definitely a hero and I'm glad he didn't suffer any long term physical injuries.

Wow! That is one heckuva story! I am so glad it ended as well as it did – though with more competence on the part of the driver, it could have certainly ended better. I most definitely could've ended worse.This speaks quite highly of the character of the Unknown Papi!
