Calling all Frida Kahlo and Vans sneaker lovers! Vault by Vans is releasing a collection honoring Frida Kahlo. Here’s what they have to say about it on their website:
This fall, Vault by Vans introduces a truly unique collection of footwear honoring painter, Frida Kahlo. Known best for her self-portraits and works deeply inspired by the nature and indigenous culture of Mexico, the Vault by Vans x Frida Kahlo collection brings a carefully curated selection of Kahlo’s paintings to life on Vans classics.
The collection is licensed through the Frida Kahlo Corporation and is in collaboration with the Banco de Mexico. The shoes will be available for purchase starting June 29 at select Vault dealers. Vault by Vans is the company’s premium line.

As with most things, the reaction to the sneakers is mixed. Some are totally on board and can’t wait to snag a pair while others are yelling “cultural appropriation” and feel that Frida wouldn’t want her art used this way. The thing is that Frida is gone and the Frida Kahlo Corporation is left to represent her and they said yes, so that’s that.
Also, at this point, where do you draw the line on Frida merchandise? It’s everywhere and people buy it. I have no doubt the sneakers will sell out because there are a lot of Vans and Frida lovers out there – myself included.
