The new de Youngsters Studio, an interactive creative space within the de Young Museum in San Francisco, officially opened on December 1st and my family and I went to check it out.
The de Youngsters Studio is on the main level of the de Young.
We lucked out with free general admission.
You never have to pay to visit the de Youngsters Studio space, which is awesome, but normally you would have to pay for general admission to the museum or to see any special exhibits. On the day that we went, though, general admission was free.
The girls scored free t-shirts, too.
As a special thank you to those who came early to the opening, there were free refreshments and t-shirts to be had as well.
But what about the de Youngsters Studio itself?
Well, it’s in a small space that somehow manages to pack in quite a few activities specifically created to engage children between the ages of 3 and 8. Although, I have to say that my 10-year-old enjoyed herself just as much as my 7-year-old did.
It’s all very hands on.
It’s a very interactive experience for the kids with plenty of opportunities for adult participation.
Yes, there’s a lot of technology incorporated throughout.
But it’s not just another screen in a kid’s face kind of experience. The technology uses visual art to tap into children’s curiosity and “is designed to create open-ended outcomes” in accordance with the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
It’s a great rainy day or any kind of day activity for families and you CANNOT beat the price. Yay for free family fun activities in San Francisco! Long may they live and more may there be.
