Everyone always talks about a pop of color as if it were the bestest thing in the world and for the most part, it is good. But what if it is a pop of color in a room that makes you want to gouge your eyes out? Okay, I may be overdramatizing a bit, but I kid you not that the gold-trim mirrored closet doors in my bedroom have always made me miserable. I’m not crazy about the doors period, but it’s that gold that truly makes me want to puke. They remind me of a bad dream I had in an apartment in the late 70s. I haven’t changed the doors because I’m a renter. Then it finally occurred to me that I could spray paint the suckas and stop wanting to gouge my pretty big brown peepers out.
This is what the monsters looked like in all their golden yuckiness.
I took them off their rails which was totally easy and taped them off using Frog Tape and plastic trash bags to cover the mirrored part. The plastic trash bags worked well because they cling to glass well, but I have to say the Frog Tape, which I normally love for painting did not work well. It didn’t want to stick to the mirror.
Once I cleaned the surface of the doors, I spray painted them using a flat black Valspar Color Radiance Paint + Primer. It took about three coats until I was satisfied with the results. I also unscrewed the closet rails and spray painted them. I left some of the gold on the inside of the top rails because I’m lazy fine with the gold peeking through here and there.
Once the spray paint was dry, I screwed the rails back in place and put the doors back on. Now, I no longer have the urge to gouge my eyes out whenever I walk into my bedroom.
Why didn’t I do this years ago? It may not seem like a very big difference to you, but it makes a HUGE difference in my world.

I totally know what you mean, Claudya! When we moved into the apartment we live in, the walls were light blue. Now, I have nothing against the color, per se, but hate it on the walls with a vengeance. I am more of a warm color type – even white would work. I prefer ivory/pale yellow/peach…you know, that sort of thing. We didn’t have enough cash to hire labor and get the repainting done. So i went and got the paint and did up the house myself. Took me a week. Time well spent. The only grudge I had was my son wanted one room painted strawberry pink and my Mom staunchly supported him. Sigh. Although, I must admit it didn’t look so bad. I cheated by making it lighter than they wanted.
Love you for your DIY-skills! The doors look great! Now I am yearning to paint something, anything! 😀
