The western edge of Golden Gate Park is home to two windmills. The southernmost windmill is know as Murphy Windmill and the one pictured above is called Dutch Windmill and is surrounded by the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden. It’s spring and the tulips were in bloom when my daughters and I went for a visit with friends this week.
The windmill is about 75 feet tall and was completed in 1902. Once upon a time both of the windmills were responsible for pumping over one million gallons of water a day, but those days are long gone. Now they just stand there looking picturesque.
