We say we that Columbus discovered America and Newton discovered gravity, as though America and gravity weren’t there until Columbus and Newton got wind of them. -Susana Kaysen, Girl, Interrupted
When I got my new DSLR camera, I bought Photoshop Elements 9. I promptly installed it on my computer and proceeded to do absolutely nothing with it because I just don’t have the time to learn it and it certainly isn’t intuitive as far as I’m concerned. All of the pictures that I share on this blog are for the most part, straight out of the camera. This week I finally made some time to learn a little.
I wanted a new picture for my Friday Fortune Cookie segment because the image I’ve been using is from clip art and well, I’d rather use my own. Here’s the picture I started with:
Yup, those are my toes at the bottom of the frame. All in all not a very good picture. I mean unless you are into eating fortune cookies off of plates on backyard patios with tantalizing toes near by. Here’s what I ended up with after playing around with Elements…
Way better, right? I mean I know I don’t have mad Photoshop skills yet, but it’s a start. Oh and you’ll be seeing that picture again at the end of the post.
We watched the movie Cyrus and I really liked it. It’s the first movie in awhile that I was really into. It’s weird, quirky, amusing, and at times uncomfortable. Just my style.
And now your Friday Fortune Cookie
(don’t forget to add “in bed” at the end, if you are so inclined):
The secret of getting ahead is getting started.

Your new fortune cookie looks great! I’m still a point and shoot photo girl… on a crappy camera or lately on the iPad which is even worse resolution…

Really great post, Mami. Wow. I am impressed with your self taught tech transformations.
I watched the trailer for Cyrus, so it is on our Netflix queue second on the list. Yay.

Wow awesome photo-shopping skills Mami! Now I must swoon ads for DSLR’s

Hey that does look like a great movie. Relationships are both funny and serious at the same time.
Now about the fortune cookie – it makes me think Declaration of Independence fortune cookie. Just a crazy suggestion – replace the bag with the fortune cookie on your pic.

Congrats on tackling that photo software! I know those things can be a challenge…or at least I’ve heard. (I’d never venture to try it!)

Adding “in bed” turns it into a poem:
The secret to getting ahead
Is getting started in bed.

Nice cookie.
I have Photospop Elements, and I have not done much on it either…..I start something, then the lines keep spreading, and I cannot unspread them, so I “X” out of it, and avoid it for another three months………….

It can be totally overwhelming. I just started looking for video tutorials of exactly what I wanted to do and following them. I found it to be easier that way.

We haven’t seen a really good movie in a while. Good to know about Cyrus!

Love what you did to the fortune cookie. I liked Cyrus and love the movie Girl Interrupted.
I think I would like to have Photoshop Elements.

Yup. Action….that’s what works.
Nice job with PS.

Pretty darned good, UM. We know you just don’t have the time to paint your toes, you’re out being creative. My two boys have been occasional Cyrus’s, but that’s another story. Can’t wait to see Sunday’s photos.

Nice new image for the Friday fortune cookie. I was going to get PS Elements 9, but my husband noticed that I can upgrade to PS 5 for a little more money. Couldn’t pass that up. I just needed better software to open my RAW photos with. If I go for the upgrade, I’ll have a lot more power for my money. Seems like a good deal to me.

You did a great job with the picture! Photoshop totally intimidates me.

I don’t even know how to add textures yet : )
You are such a super star!

Helloooooo Mami……thought I would drop in and surprise you. Congratulations on taking that first step on the learning curve. I have a few programs myself that I’m not real familiar with either simply because I don’t take the time to use them.
Hope that life finds you and your family well.

Well, helloooo….you have been missed! Thank you so much for stopping by and saying hello. You’ve actually been in my thoughts lately. I hope everything is well with you and yours. Have a great holiday season and stop by and say hello every now and again. So nice to hear from you.

I love the fortune cookie! Are you happy with the camera? I want a new one and am a bit lost. I’ve just started to do the research. It is so much easier to here someone say “I love this one.” Happy Treating and have a powerful week…

I love the camera. I have a Canon T1i and I love it. Having said that, if I had to do it over again I would spend $50 more and get the Canon T2i. I will probably never use the video option on my camera, but I would use it on the T2i.
