Unknown Papi is always telling me that I should go out and he’ll watch the kids. Honestly, most of the time I am too tired to go out. I’d be in heaven if he would watch the kids while I hung out in the bedroom and spent some quality time with my laptop, but if I’m home somehow it is impossible to get any “off” time. It just isn’t going to happen. So when I was offered the chance (via this blog) to see a screening of the movie Friends with Kids, and it happened to be a night that Unknown Papi wasn’t working, I thought it was the Universe saying, “Mami, go out and have some fun!”
So accompanied by a friend and a tub of popcorn, to the screening I went. Tired as I am, I probably wouldn’t have made the effort to go if it weren’t for the excellent cast which stars Adam Scott (“Parks and Recreation”), Jennifer Westfeldt (who also wrote and directed the film), Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris O’Dowd, Megan Fox and Edward Burns.
The movie officially opens March 9th 2012 and, I guess, would be classified as a romantic comedy, but really it is more serious than that. I was surprised by the emotional depth of some of the scenes. Quite frankly, I enjoyed the second half of the movie more than the first. The first half was funnier and it’s not that I didn’t enjoy it, it’s just that the second half rang truer. Life is not a comedy or a romance or a tragedy; it’s all those things at once and the second half of Friends with Kids seems to embrace that truth.
I had a great time with my friend who also has 2 kids almost the same exact ages as mine. I left the house without all the usual paraphernalia and felt like I was traveling light. It was strange to have full use of both of my arms and hands.
Unknown Papi is right, I do need to make more of an effort to get out with friends even though I’m tired. The truth is that I’m tired no matter what and even though I was out, in a way it was relaxing because for a couple of hours I was only responsible for me.
And now your Friday Fortune Cookie
(don’t forget to add “in bed” at the end, if you are so inclined):
You will be invited to an exciting event.

This looks like a good mom’s night out movie…maybe I’ll treat myself too. (I’m really cheap when it comes to paying for a movie.)
And I LOVE this line – Life is not a comedy or a romance or a tragedy; it’s all those things at once – very true!

moms! sheesh. I go to the movies to escape the seriousness and emotional depth of my life. Because of that I like my movies like I once liked my one-night stands: Shallow, meaningless, and entertaining.

Well, my days consist of toddler pratfalls, knock knock jokes, and poop up to my elbows. I don’t mind a little emotional depth in a comedy. Plus now you’ve got me thinking of comedy in general and anything that gives me a good hearty laugh is never shallow or meaningless ’cause laughter is its own reward. Now a one-night stand probably wouldn’t stay a one-night stand if it weren’t shallow and meaningless. I’ve had one-night stands with movies that left me feeling much less entertained and satisfied than actual one night stands. Anyway, didn’t mean to write such a lengthy response. I’m just glad I got out of the house and the movie didn’t suck and when I got home there was no poop to clean up. Catch ya later.

I’m glad you had a night out. Everyone needs time out away from the pressures of every day life. You should do it more often if you get the chance!
Have a great weekend too!

Now that I saw how smoothly it all went in my absence, there is no reason not to get out and enjoy some time alone or with friends.

It sounds just like the kind of movie I need to see. A great mix. Thanks for the review and yes, sometimes, we mommies just need a break!

Yes yes Continue to go out even if tired. I joined a Lenten women’s group at my church b/c it met on wednesday nights and I could get away from the fracas (and poop). My kids are older now and not as poopy. I am not too religious (ie the women’s study didn’t stick)

I’m so glad you got out and enjoyed this!
And that fortune cookie message is probably the best one to finish with “in bed” that I’ve ever seen! LOL

Ah, getting out. Sounds delightful!! It’s so true, even if daddy is home, the kids automatically come to mommy for all issues. They are wired that way on a daily basis.
I may have to check that movie out. I really don’t hit the theatre, too loud these days. But getting out of the house with some gal friends does sound quite heavenly. I am glad you went out UM!!

I could be talked into seeing it just to watch Kristen Wiig (who has the simplest web site I’ve seen http://kristenwiig.com/
Oh I forgot to share this Fortune Cookie pic before

When our kids were young, FH was a youth pastor and our teens GAVE us one night out a month (date night) and they provided babysitting FREE. It was THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD.

Yaaa for getting out without kids!
Stew and I got an entire day off last weekend when we went fishing!
It was a novel feeling not having to worry about kids.

I’m really happy you got out. Hopefully more movie opportunities will present themselves. It’s a great way to escape, even when you’re tired. That movie looks great BTW.

It is so nice to have a night alone or a night with friends. When my kids were young my mom used to watch them a few hours a week so I could either go out with their dad or go out with friends. I also love to read and so often would go to bed an hour early just so I could read. Or I’d let both girls climb into my bed with me but they HAD TO READ as I was doing.

I try to get out with some of my mom friends every few months… Unknown Papi is right – it’s important to get out by ourselves and be someone other than mommy for a few hours…
I hadn’t heard of this movie before but I will definitely be on the lookout for it!

I’ll add “Going to the movies more” to my list of things to do when Mr.4444 is gone. Thanks!

Roll by this way next time you want to get away. I’ll show you a good-old-fashioned kid-free crazy-debaucherous-adults-acting-like-they-have-no-good-sense time.
Actually, I’m way too boring for that. But let me know if you’re ever in NY and we’ll catch a movie or something.
