As I write this, I am a bit of a wreck because my one kidney wonder, Luna Pie, is getting a renogram on 3/16/12. I know it is not considered a dangerous procedure, but still she is tiny (she’s 1 and considered small for her age) and they are going to put a catheter in her! I am not tiny and I have had a catheter inserted and it was not much fun at all. Wish me strength to sooth my baby and put on a brave and comforting face for her.
What bums me out the most (other than the fact that Luna Pie has to have the procedure at all) is that I have to take her without Unknown Papi, he’s working and can not take the day off. Unknown Papi is a champ in these situations. He is loving and supportive and just gets us through it. I am used to leaning on him. I know I can and will handle it, but it makes me realize how lucky I am most of the time to have his help. He’s a good man, a good father, and a good husband.
Question(s):
- Do you wear glasses or contacts?
- If so, how do you pay for the expense? Out of pocket or do you have insurance that covers the cost?
- Do you find eye care to be expensive or is it an affordable necessity for you?
- How often do you get your eyes checked?
- How often do you get new prescription glasses?
I just got some new glasses and I’m wondering what your experiences are like regarding eye care.
And now your Friday Fortune Cookie

Oh! My! I’m so sorry!!! I’ll be praying for her, you, your hubby and everyone in between. Scary stuff!!! you are a lucky woman to have such a great man by your side BUT!!! it’s all scary just the same. I have been here a time or two… okay about 6 maybe more with my kids. . .Your one kidney wonder will be fine ~ YOU! however, will never recover!!! 🙂 It’s so hard being the mama. Much love to you.

Oh my friend…it sucks that Unknown Papi cannot be there. I hate when I have to do something with Norrin and Joseph can’t be there. I get through it and I put on my brave mom face but that extra support is nice to have. Is there anyone else that can go with you?
As for glasses – I alternate between contacts and glasses.
I try to get an exam every year but I forget and it seems like a waste of money since my vision rarely changes. We used to have insurance through Joseph’s job but now we don’t and I don’t want to pay for it through my insurance. I’ve been going to my eyeglass place for years so the girls there usually hook us up.
But it gets expensive – especially because I have to have my lenses thinned and I like to be a little fancy with my glasses. I go back and forth between getting the surgery done…
AutismWonderland says
And of course good luck today – my thoughts are with you and Luna Pie! XOXOXOXOXOX

You got this!!! But it’s always better when they are around! I wear glasses and I use to just go for the whatever frames were on sale. My husband wears glasses also but he is a bit fancier!!!Prada, Gucci, fancier!!! LOL He got me the frames I have last xmas and I really do love them and so I guess is just an expenses that I have to deal with because with both of us needing glasses it can get expensive!

Hi you! Don’t worry about bumper stickers. I know that sounds out of the blue to others, but you will know what I’m talking about. I’m just so glad to have met you and known you for going on a couple years now… which brings me to this point. HOW ON EARTH CAN LUNA PIE BE ONE!? She was just born like 2 months ago?! Will be thinking good and positive thoughts on you and Luna today, and every day. The thing about catheters… You have a good understanding of where it goes and how it goes in and out and what it does and what it requires in the process. Its horrifying. You have the sense to know that the “thing” doesn’t feel natural there. Be thankful that Luna is too little to know or understand any of that. Poor babe!!

Hope all goes well with Luna Pie! My health insurance pays for an eye exam every 2 years. The cost of the glasses is not covered.
LL Cool Joe says
Good luck with the surgery today. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Otin says
Aww. That is tough for a mother to see her child go through any procedure. I hope everything works out okay.
Ascapecodturns says
Hope everything goes well today! My nephew has to have renograms and the catheter part just thinking about it grosses me out. Hope it goes smooth for her and YOU!
BTW, I buy reading glasses at Target…..sorry, not very helpful.
Susan Kirkman says
my girl had a renogram when she was 5yo…she’s now getting ready to be 20. It went well for her…and praying it goes the same for your girl. You be strong and love her through it…our nurses were wonderfully caring.
I wear glasses
I’m fortunate to have supplemental insurance that helps with the cost
I find it can be very expensive…according to your choices.
I usually go every other year…unfortunately, my mom has recently been diagnosed with wet macular degeneration and it’s genetic…so I’ll probably have to start going yearly.

I wear glasses but I tried contacts long ago. I learned the hard way that my eyes are not the best for contacts (too flat?). Insurance covers some but not much. Back when our insurance was better I would get an exam every year or two. Now I stretch it out longer. The frames for glasses are extremely over priced.
Oh my FF post has a picture of a place you may have seen.
You will handle your baby’s procedure with compassion and love because that’s what a good mother does and you are one.
CiCi Winningham says
Poor Luna Pie. And poor mom too.
I have no insurance, I get my eyes checked once a year, pay out of pocket for glasses and exams.
Everything seems expensive. I go to the eye doctor and don’t go to dentist.
viridian61 says
Best of everything with the renogram.
I wear glasses. I forget to get exams so I go maybe once every 3 years or when things get blurry. Our insurance covers the exam and part of the glasses cost but not everything. I’m thinking of going back to contacts but that will be expensive. Glasses frames are WAY overpriced.

I’ve just come on to read this, I hope everything went well! My sister has had to take her daughter for the same thing as an infant, and I think there should be a medal for both of you!
Frau says
Luna is in my thoughts today….I’m sure she did great and you too! ((hugs))
I don’t wear glasses and try to get my eyes checked every year but I’m a little behind since moving here.
Have a wonderful weekend!

I hope everything went okay with the procedure… for LunaPie AND you 😉
I wore contacts for years but then about 6 years ago I stopped wearing them and went back to glasses. Last fall I decided I wanted contacts again and I just swap back and forth between the two depending on my plans for the day.
Our insurance only pays 100 euros every three years (used to be two but it changed in 2012) and glasses are HIDEOUSLY expensive here I find… it winds up being cheaper to pay out of pocket when I visit the US.
I have my eyes checked once a year due to certain health issues but only get the “how bad is your eyesight” exam every couple of years.
I try to avoid getting new glasses whenever I can because I have such a hard time adjusting to new prescriptions and frames but it’s usually every 3-4 years.
Chris H says
I hope all goes well with Luna Pies renogram mate.
Eyes: only get my eyes retested when I want new glasses. No medical insurance cover, so it costs a lot. I only ‘want’ new glasses when I break the current ones!
Laurie Matherne says
I am late to the party but I hope Luna Pie did okay. I wear glasses, although I had lasik a long time ago. But now that I am older, I need glasses for reading, and once again, for driving. On top of that I have glaucoma. My insurance has a huge deductible so, I play all of that out of pocket until charges reach the moon. The drops alone are over $200 a month. My solution? I get my lenses, exams and drops through a medical clinic in Honduras. It’s the same medicine, same type of lenses, etc. I paid $20 for my prescription last year, using an older pair of lenses for the driving glasses. My readers I pick up discount stores. A missionary gave me a years supply of drops recently. I think the US is past due to begin building an affordable health program for its citizens.

I hope your sweet baby girl is home happy and resting…. and forgetting all about her test. And I hope the end result is a very happy and healthy kidney.
As for glasses… I get my eyes checked annually and wear reading and distance glasses. I don’t have the nerve to get contacts or have Lasix surgery. It’s all an out of pocket expense for us. We don’t have vision coverage. And the glasses aren’t cheap 🙁

Sending my best thoughts and wishes to you and Luna Pie for a safe procedure.

So sorry that you have to face Luna Pie’s procedure alone … that has to suck… is there a friend who can go with you? As for glasses, I’ve got a contact for a review opp if you want one for online glasses ordering – Wayne just had his eye exam so we’re going to order him a pair of sunglasses from them for my review.

Dear Unknown Mami – even as I write this, I am sending you positive vibes and will be, all day. The procedure will go absolutely fine. I do wish she did not have to go through it (catheters suck!) but let us believe that it will keep her healthy and well. I know how it feels to take a baby to the doc – my son suffered from wheezing for several years and it was not always possible for Sury to accompany us. Vidur would cough all night – great big bouts and I would have a hard time holding back the tears. It would be like nothing could touch the problem, and the medications were simply being digested out without doing a thing. But that’s not true. He did get better. There were times when he coughed nonstop for 40 minutes – yes – that we were alarmed out of our wits. He did recover, though – and it is easy for me to talk about it. Luna Pie will be fine. You and your family are always in my prayers, especially when I light my lamp each morning (I also have a chat with Goddess Lakshmi, you know, especially for you). Do go with confidence and courage – and you will be back, happy and relieved. A gentle kiss on Luna Pie’s forehead.
Ah yes, I wear glasses for astigmatism and shortsight. I feel naked without them. While eyecare itself is not that expensive and can be managed, since it is only once in six months, I find the glasses , especially the progressive lens very expensive. Who pays? I pay. Out of pocket. No insurance cover for this. And now, since I am going through my forties – it is even worse because the power keeps changing. The good thing from this? Makes me look intelligent and I enjoy choosing the frames.
Sending you love and wishing you and your family good health, Unknown Mami – always.

oh man, I know there’s nothing I can say to make the procedure better but I hope that it at least is worth the trouble (meaning they find what they are looking for.)
I do wear contacts and I don’t have insurance but I find that a eye examine for contacts is only about 90 bucks and 30 bucks for a box of contacts that last about 6 weeks.

I hope everything went well and your mama heartache wasn’t too bad.
About the glasses, I have horrible, like legally blind, vision so I go every year to make sure its not getting any worse. Right now I have VSP through my husband’s insurance. Because my vision is so bad, I get an allowance for a new pair of contacts or glasses every year (but perhaps that part of the plan anyway, I think I just get a slightly bigger allowance or something because it falls under medical and legal necessity). I wear hard contacts every day, all day, so I update them annually and then every few years skip the contacts and get new glasses instead. The contacts are almost entirely covered. While I was pregnant and still working, I splurged and got some nicer glasses than I would normally get and paid a couple hundred out of pocket to cover the cost that went beyond the allowance. I figured if I kept them for at least five years, the cost/use ratio would balance it out. I don’t wear glasses in public (hello, coke bottles!) so I’m not worried about fashion or even keeping the prescription current with them like I do with contacts.

In all honesty, yes so hard for you to go thru with her. I am a surgical nurse and worked for many years in kidney transplant. You are with her before and after this. Comfort her with all you have in you. The love is healing and comforting to children. I will pray for uou all for a quick, uncomplicated procedure. In answer of your question, I don’t have vision, but I wear glasses and I wait for the specials to get an exam and buy glasses.

How did it go?! Next time, see if you and U.P. can switch places 🙂
I wear contacts, for which I pay out-of-pocket. I get a yearly exam covered by my insurance. I would like to have a pair of glasses for back-up, but I can’t afford them.
