Brought to you by LeapFrog
My daughter is only 4-years-old and she is already taking university classes and sometimes she lets her 2-year-old sister tag along. I should clarify that I am speaking of Monsters University via LeapFrog.
We were offered the opportunity to review both LeapFrog’s Monsters University Interactive 3D book and the Monsters University game cartridge/app and as always when it comes to LeapFrog products we jumped at the chance. Both the book and the game are based on the new Disney Pixar Monsters University movie and follow the story of Mike and Sully, two monsters that come to embrace and appreciate their differences while learning to work together.
As soon as the package arrived my eldest started checking out the Monsters University book that is compatible with the TAG Reader or LeapReader. This is the first 3D book that LeapFrog has created and it comes with a pair of 3D glasses. The book is completely usable without the 3D glasses, but the glasses add a whole other dimension.
My daughter asked what the glasses were for and when I told her they made certain things look like they were in 3D, she said, “What is 3D?” Ha! After explaining the concept to her, she was excited to explore the pages and loved the effects.
The book was a hit with both of my littles and includes all kinds of games that build logic and reasoning skills as well as reading and grammar skills. My one issue with the book is that is should come with more than one pair of 3D glasses because now I live in fear of the one pair being destroyed by my little monsters or being lost.
The Monsters University cartridge that we have been using on our LeapPad2, but that also works on Leapster Explorer was not as instantly embraced as the book. Mostly it had to do with my 4-year-old feeling a little overwhelmed in the beginning. She couldn’t figure out where she wanted to start and said, “I can’t do it!”
Of course I told her, “Yes, you can.” I sat with her and we stated with Mid-game mixers and did the Monster Match game.
Well, after that she felt all comfortable and played without me. I look over at her at one point and she is customizing a monster and taking a picture of herself to use as the monster’s face. Later I hear her screaming into the microphone and figure she’s fitting right in with all the odd monsters at Monsters University.
It’s always a pleasure to try out LeapFrog’s new offerings and I love to see my children learning and playing. As much as I’ve always thought that LeapFrog products are the bomb-diggity, now that I get access to behind the scenes information about how much work, research, development, testing, and tweaking go into every product I am even more amazed by the educational value of these games.
