Back-to-school season is a mixture of excitement, chaos and stress for parents. We worry about getting our kids and ourselves back into the school routine and sometimes in the hustle and bustle of it all we notice the things that go wrong and forget to notice the beauty in ALL that we are doing right. That’s why I want to tell you about one of my favorite fellow moms at my daughter’s school. She is always doin’ good and I wonder if she even knows how good she’s doing.
Part of the excitement of back-to-school season for parents is that you get to see some parents you haven’t had a chance to connect with all summer. The first week of school I was keeping my eyes open for sightings of parents I wanted to touch base with and one morning as I was walking my daughter into school I saw a mom I’ve always admired. She is very involved in school activities and incredibly helpful. She was sitting on the bench right by where the school buses drop off the kids, but even though she has two children enrolled at the school they were nowhere in sight.
I walked up to her and chatted and during the course of our quick conversation I found out that she was sitting there waiting for her daughters to arrive on the school bus. Let me break it down for you in case it isn’t clear: she dropped her daughters off at their school bus stop, then she drove to school to wait for them and make sure they got there OK. Why? Because it was the first week of school and she wanted to make sure everything went smoothly for them. I know it’s silly, but I’m totally tearing up while writing about it because, gosh darn it, that there is LOVE with capital letters.
Now, her daughters probably don’t think it’s a big deal because they are used to having the kind of mom that goes above and beyond for them and this mother may not think it’s a big deal either because she is and always has been the kind of mother that goes above and beyond, but I KNOW it’s a big deal. I know it takes extra effort on her part and it makes me so incredibly proud of her and happy for her family.
Here’s the thing that really gets to me: she’s not the only parent that I see #DoinGood time and time again. I see them at morning drop off, walking their kids all the way into school and kissing them goodbye. I am surrounded by amazing parents who do incredibly well by their children and probably don’t take the time to pat themselves on the back for it.
Well, I want to give all these parents and even myself a humble and loving pat on the back for doin’ good.
I wanted to be a part of Minute Maid’s “Doin’ Good” campaign because it is about celebrating moms and dads who are, doin’ good even better than they might think. It’s about embracing perfect imperfection, making the most of the time we spend with our kids and making the best of some of the more challenging moments of being a parent. It’s also about recognizing other parents and the great job they’re doing. Follow Minute Maid on Twitter and Facebook to share and read more #DoinGood stories.
