Chewing gum takes me back to a time in my youth (think tween to teenage years) where I felt a teeny tiny bit invincible. A bit of swagger in my step, and ready to see what unfolds is how I felt then and how I feel now when I pop a piece of delectable chicle in my mouth.
If I go with that feeling and let my imagination run wild, it seems that anything is possible in my bilingual world.
I don’t chew gum as often as I used to when I was younger and now when I do, I do it on the down-low simply because I don’t want to share. Yup, that’s right, I don’t want to share my gum with you or anyone else. Go get your own! Don’t judge me, I live with a 1-year-old child, a 4 year-old child, and a 34-year-old husband. I have to share so much throughout the day that sometimes there is nothing left for me.
On the rare occasion that I get a moment to myself, I like to use it to do something special just for me. I can’t jet off to Hawaii, sometimes a long luxurious bath is even too much to ask for, but I can connect to my younger, invincible, imaginative, positively-inclined-self by just unwrapping a piece of Trident Layers gum (right now I’m partial to the green apple and golden pineapple flavor). There is something soothing about the initial burst of flavor and workin’ my jaw like a teenager.
One of my favorite times to see what unfolds with Trident is when I’m driving. The kids are strapped in the back; technically I’m not alone, but I turn on the radio, play music from my youth and chew some Trident. You could say I’m flashing back to the past, but it makes me feel so very happy in the NOW.
How do you treat yourself to a little something special?

This post has me laughing out loud. I’m still in my pre-Mommy stage and never thought about chewing gum (with no sharing) at a luxury. Thank you, Unknown Mami!

😀 You’re absolutely right! I also feel a little more swaggery with that stick of gum in my mouth. Yes, anything seems possible. I love the visual of you doing all the things you described! Where’s the music, people?

I do not chew gum even though it is promted here as good for dental health, not all types but special sugar free types.

Yeah, before doing this post I ended up doing a lot of research on the sweetener that is promoted for dental health. I had no idea it was naturally derived.

It’s hard to sneak gum…once you start chewing it’s like people come out of the wood work wanting a piece!

Right?! I guess that’s how smokers feel about people bumming cigarettes.

Good morning, Mami.
I so love the images you create in this post.
I think I must be one of the ‘odd-ones-out here – I’m not a gum lover. Don’t shoot me folks, we can’t all be the same!
And I have to say I’m not too keen on gum-lovers, either (present company excepted!). Why, oh why, do they have to drop the blessed stuff on the pavements all the time?
We had a lovely new look to the high street in our seaside town – all red pavia and fancy edging. Now it’s like join-the-dots with gum balls everywhere. And I object to the fact that my hard earned cash goes on paying the Council to send out cleaners to try to get rid of the flippin’ stuff.
Ok – moan over.
Enjoy your few moments of pleasure, but keep your eye on the kids. They’ll have left home to go to Uni next week and you’ll have more time on your hands than you care to think about!
Kind regards from the bird with an empty nest,
L

I have to say I have gotten into fights with my mother because she spits her gum out the window when she’s driving. It makes me so angry. She doesn’t get why it pisses me off so much. It’s strange because it is so not in keeping with the “ladylike” behaviour she likes to project.
