Thousands gathered at Dolores Park in San Francisco at 10 A.M. on Saturday, June, 30 to march to the city’s Civic Center as part of the Families Belong Together rally.
Although, the Trump administration has stopped separating migrant children from their parents as part of their “zero tolerance” policy, over 2,000 children have already been separated from their parents and those children need to be reunited with their parents NOW.
We went as a family and made sure to explain to our children why we were going. As we discussed how some children had been taken from their parents, I reminisced about how hard it was to leave my children at daycare and how they screamed so loudly when I left them there the first time that I could hear their screams halfway down the block as I walked away.
It was incredibly difficult not to turn around and go back to them. And this was at daycare when I knew that they would be cared for and that I would see them in a few hours. I cannot even begin to imagine the terror that the migrant children and parents who have been separated must be feeling.
To not know if and when you will ever be reunited is a type of torture that is beyond cruel and has no business being a part of any “justice” system. It’s wrong, it’s wrong, it’s wrong. If you are not upset by it then there is something wrong with you. There are no two sides to this story. Or maybe there are: the right side and the WRONG side.
I took some pictures at the rally and wanted to share some of the signs with you.
If you aren’t furious, WAKE UP!
For those who do not speak or read Spanish, this sign reads: “The government has sequestered more than 2,000 children. If you are not furious, wake up! Families united, not separated.”
CAUTION child snatching
This sign says it all without using any words.
As for the First Lady’s careless choice in jackets
Yeah, we should all care.
Humankind = Human + Kind
Clearly, we need a reminder to put the kind back in humankind.
Make America Human Again
Especially when there is NOTHING great about traumatizing children and splitting families apart.
Make it right, reunite
Let’s please get these families back together as soon as possible.
We can’t stand by and let children suffer
It’s our responsibility to care for ALL children.
Rallies are great, but they are not enough. The government has no current plan for reunification. Unacceptable.
How you can help reunite families:
The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), is a nonprofit in Texas that provides legal services to migrant children, families and refugees. They help post bond for parents who have been detained. You can donate financially to them and they are also looking for volunteer attorneys, interpreters, interns and graphic designers.
Asylum Seekers Advocacy Project is dedicated to preventing the deportation of families seeking asylum. In addition to needing more financial donations they are also asking for volunteer attorneys, law students and interns.
Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) provides legal representation to migrant children who have come into the country alone so that they do not appear in court without someone to advocate for them because believe it or not it happens.
