Hola Chulas y Chulos! Hope you are wearing clean chonies because it’s time for another edition of The Flying Chancla Report. Every week I let my chancla roam the internet to finds things that will be of interest to you and here’s what my chancla found for you this week:
- As I’m sure you’ve noticed, the pope is touring the U.S. and there is a lot to be said on that topic, but my chancla wants to highlight the sweet moment on Wednesday between Pope Francis and 5-year-old Sophie Cruz. The pope was doin’ his thing and cruisin’ in his popemobile during the papal parade in Washington D.C., when he noticed that security was trying to keep a little girl who had crossed the barricades from getting to him. Well, in true “Pope of the People” fashion he waved the girl over and gave her a big hug. The little girl is Sophie Cruz and she had a letter with her that she gave the pope. Watch their encounter here in a video filmed by someone who was standing right by Sophie Cruz during the parade. It’s really touching and clearly the little girl was quite affected.
As reported by Univision, the letter Cruz handed the pope reads: “Pope Francis, I want to tell you my heart is very sad because I’m afraid that one day, my parents may be deported by ICE. I have a right to live with my parents. I have a right to happiness. My parents work very hard… immigrants like my father help contribute to this country.” If you speak or understand Spanish, I highly recommend you watch Sophie Cruz reveal what was in the letter.

- The next bit of chisme my chancla didn’t even have a chance to get off the internet. We both heard it on NPR on our drive to drop off my daughters at school. Get this: John Boehner announced this morning (it’s Friday in case you are wondering) that he will be resigning as speaker of the House and giving up his seat in Congress at the end of October. WHAT?! He released a statement saying,
The first job of any Speaker is to protect this institution that we all love. It was my plan to only serve as Speaker until the end of last year, but I stayed on to provide continuity to the Republican Conference and the House. It is my view, however, that prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable damage to the institution. To that end, I will resign the Speakership and my seat in Congress on October 30.
Seems like a pretty big deal, no? The announcement does not come completely out of the blue as he’s been getting lots of pressure from conservatives in the Republican party to do as they want or they will throw a big hissy fit (my words, not theirs), so I’m sure that has much to do with Boehner deciding to resign, but many think that it is no accident that the announcement came just one day after Pope Francis addressed Congress while visiting the Capitol. John Boehner could be seen getting his cry on behind the pope the entire time.
I am certainly NOT making fun of Boehner for crying as I am a big crier myself and actually appreciate that a powerful man is not afraid to cry in public like all the time as Boehner does. Anyhoo, I’m wondering if the impact the visit of the pope had on Boehner did somehow influence him to get the heck out of Dodge. ¿Quién sabe? I guess we’ll have to wait for the autobiography to find out. In case you missed Boehner’s tears, here’s just a tiny bit of them:
I think it’s sweet actually. It’s just unfortunate that Boehner is an ugly crier. I am too, so I feel for him. Some of us can’t keep our faces together when we cry.

I LOVE YOU JUANGA!!! - This next bit might be the sweetest, most heartbreaking and yet inspiring thing my chancla came across. It is divorce advice from a 6-year-old girl to her mother and it is quite truly EVERYTHING! This child is wise, wonderful and so RIGHT ON.
