12 years ago, I married my best friend.
I was 36 years old at the time and he was a month-ish shy of 30.
It wasn’t a fancy affair.
We got married at San Francisco City Hall on a Friday and afterward, we hosted a potluck party/reception at our house.
It was absolutely perfect!
Everything about that day was wonderful.
In some ways, it feels like we just got married, but it has definitely been 12 years since we got married and in honor of those 12 years I would like to share 12 things that have changed since we got married.
- We used to shower together a lot back in the day, now we’re like “Uh-uh, I’m not standing over here shivering while you hog up the hot water.” Back then showering together was a way of expressing our love. Nowadays, letting each other enjoy a solo hot shower says I love you loud and clear.
- We became parents. Our two phenomenal daughters have changed our lives in too many beautiful ways to count.
- We learned the true meaning of being tired.
- We left jobs that led nowhere and somehow found our way to careers that we love.
- We know how to fight dirty. We try to fight fair. We’re learning when to give up the fight.
- We stay home way more than we go out. At first, it was out of necessity and now it’s by choice.
- We have come to realize that one of the hardest questions in life is “What’s for dinner?”
- There is always freakin’ laundry that needs to be done.
- We never watch Saturday Night Live when it originally airs because we fall asleep before it comes on and have to watch it the next day on Hulu.
- We don’t drink like we used to because we fall asleep after a couple of drinks.
- We used to complain about how places wouldn’t stay open late enough, now we complain that places don’t open early enough.
- We’ve chosen each other when choosing each other has not been as easy as it was in the beginning.

Yes, October 5th is our anniversary. I can’t believe it’s yours too. That’s crazy. Kekoa and I “got together” in 2001 and got married in 2007. Happy anniversary to you!
