My husband is able to explain to Luna Pie (19 months old) that it is bed time and put her in her crib and walk out of the room, she then somehow miraculously falls asleep. Me, not so much.
The last couple of nights I’ve been trying something different. Luna Pie shares a room with her sister, but goes to bed earlier. We do our usual bedtime routine, I lay with her for a few minutes and let her nurse, then I put her in her crib and tell her that I’m not leaving, but that she has to fall asleep. She says, “Okay” and I sit on her sister’s bed with my netbook and blog until she falls asleep. I’ve heard of the “cry it out” and the “no-cry” sleep-training methods, but I do believe I’ve just invented the blog sleep-training method.
I might be getting a little over-confident as this is only the second night and at the moment she doesn’t seem to be be comforted by the glow of the computer on my face or lulled by the sound of my keyboard. Fear not, these things take time.
How do you fall asleep? Do you count laptops or iSheep?
Gotta go, Luna Pie just told me in her sweet baby voice that she wants me to get off the computer. So much for blog sleep training. I tried people, I tried.
And now your Friday Fortune Cookie
(don’t forget to add “in bed” at the end, if you are so inclined):
Create your own miracles.

Too cute!

I don’t usually have much trouble falling asleep, but if you were on a bed beside me I would probably stay awake wondering what you are writing about. 🙂
You may be on to something with Luna Pie….it is definitely worth a try. At her age, anything that works for a night or two is a good idea.

But the blogs are all too funny not to break out laughing during this go-to-sleep method.
Here’s a suggestion – play a few lullaby tunes on the laptop while you post – oh one more – do you think if I wrote a bed time story blog it would be used for this?
unknownmami says
I do have music playing in the background, but I guess punk rock is not that soothing.

Whatever works for you!
I like the message in the Fortune Cookie. Have a great weekend!

We read stories on the iPad followed by one show on NetFlix…He falls asleep cuddling the iPad.

When our oldest child was very very young, FH TRAINED me to lay her down and let her fall asleep. It was hard for me the first few nights.
Later, I was ever so grateful as it solved sooooo many bedtime issues. Our kids, all of them, would go to bed wherever and whenever we put them down. No coming back out for drinks or kisses etc.
But, had I been left to my own parenting tendencies, I doubt I would have learned the lesson.
Parenting is the hardest job on the planet.

haha awww how sweet! 🙂

I don’t have kids, at least at home. I play word games on my kindle until I get sleepy. I don’t have iPad like every other living American citizen. Do I sound a tad jealous?
unknownmami says
I don’t have an iPad either and I am more than a tad jealous.
SassyModernmom says
Loving your method! Can u please come and put me too sleep? lol
unknownmami says
Why don’t you just read my blog until you’re bored to sleep? I mean soothed to sleep.
Angelia Sims says
Oh man! I really thought that was a brilliant one. What if you invent a hood to block the glowing screen glare? 🙂
unknownmami says
Perhaps we can collaborate on that accessory?

Best method I’ve heard of! I used to write in bed after my son had gone to sleep because he liked having a body next to him. I think its a productive compromise!
Judy Retirednottired says
I have the same problem with my youngest grandchild. She almost has to drop in her tracks before she will fall asleep.
Zemeks says
Too bad the blog method didn’t work–would’ve been nice!

Hugs! I am having to use tough love with Erik too… he’s 23 months and has been out of his crib for the past 6 or 7 months… so he can wander freely which means if he’s up, I’m up…
SamiJoe says
I hope you find a solution soon. Maybe you should just leave and let her chat it out?
deborahpucci says
LOL….sounds like a great new method!
Hilary says
Ha.. that’s cute.. and could work.. maybe.. hopefully. 🙂

You’re so funny…

You are SO funny! I was never good at the cry it out method. My son-in-law recently accused me of rocking my daughter to sleep until she was 18 because she always falls asleep with her nook or the tv on…hmmm so do I and I see nothing wrong with it!

UM,
Ever since I had my third baby you would think that I am more exhausted then ever (I AM) BUT I can’t fall asleep. I bring my iPhone to bed and read til I doze off…
Hang in there!

I have the same issue. I’m too tired to sleep.

The most important thing with kids is to set a routine and follow it every time. Even when “noise” is coming from your keyboard, it wouldn’t really be that much of a bother if that’s what your child hears every night before going to bed.
Haylee Hansen says
That’s a great strategy, there are many methods but that’s a respectable one. Dp you think the baby relies on you being there every night?
unknownmami says
I think they rely on someone being there and going through the routine with them.
