Tortilla Art Is Totally a Thing and It’s Flippin’ Awesome

I never knew that tortilla art existed until I stumbled across the work of San Jose, California artist Joe Bravo who creates incredible pieces of art using tortillas and acrylic paint.

I love tortillas and I love art, so it only stands to reason that if you put the two together and create tortilla art I’m probably going to love the results. And I do!

I was so excited by Joe Bravo’s work that I went looking for other tortilla artists and I am happy to report that tortilla art is totally a thing and practiced by many other talented folks like Rob the Original, a barber/artist from Los Angeles who is currently living in Texas and there is even a group in San Francisco called The Great Tortilla Conspiracy that refer to themselves as “world’s most dangerous tortilla art collective.”

I can keep telling you how great tortilla art is, but ultimately the proof is in the tortillas. Feast your eyes on these examples of tortilla art:

Now that Danny Trejo has his own taqueria Trejo’s Tacos maybe he should consider serving them on Trejo tortillas like this one, but people would probably be too scared to bite into Trejo.

Artists Art Hazelwood, Nancy Buchanan, Jos Sances, & Rio Metivier are using chocolate syrup & black food coloring to silkscreen #political quesadillas for CSPG’s annual event. #JosSances is the recipient of CSPG’s 2015 Art is a Hammer Award. #TheGreatTortillaConspiracy

I admire the work that went into creating these political quesadillas, but the Donald Trump one would surely give me an upset stomach. I vote no on that one.

Looking for a unique gift to give? La Tienda has you covered, take this “Zapata #3” acrylic on flour tortilla from artist #JoeBravo. Bravo uses his imagination and juxtaposes different materials to create unique representations of #mexicanculture.

Another Joe Bravo tortilla luchador looking like he’s trying to pull you into the tortilla with him.

FYI, not all tortilla art is edible. I don’t want you to go and eat a piece of tortilla that’s been painted and then blame me when you get a tummy ache. That’s all on you.

So talk to me, did you know tortilla art is a thing? Do you like it? Does it make you hungry?

OK, I’ve heard it all! How awesome is this! I like the idea of tortillas being served with special art. Not so crazy about the inedible ones. I would rather see the paintings on something more substantial.

I like these & didn’t know it was a thing. I just wonder how long the non-edible ones last…do they eventually disintegrate? What if they start growing fuzzies, I’d hate to throw away my tortilla art!!!

I believe Joe Bravo seals his, so that probably helps preserve. I don’t know. I might try to make my own as kitchen decor and see if sealing them helps. I’ll let you know.
