A lot of things happened in 2008, but for me, the most significant thing that happened that year is that I became a mother. A mother to an extraordinary human being that is turning 12 this year. On this momentous occasion, I feel compelled to make 12 wishes for the child that I feel honored and humbled to call my daughter.
Mi Querida Put Pie,
- May you hear “I love you” many, many times throughout your life from the many, many people who are bound to love you because you are so lovable.
- May you say “I love you” to many, many people throughout your life because feeling and expressing love is always a good thing.
- May you never lose your ability to say “no” when saying no is in your best interest.
- May you say “yes” when it’s in your best interest even when fear is pushing you to say no.
- May your relationship with your sister always be one of love and support.
- May you always feel secure in the knowledge that you and your sister are the greatest loves of your parents’ lives.
- May you continue to seek out knowledge and teach yourself how to do things with the same determination that you do now.
- May laughing so much that it hurts happen so often that you develop abs of steel from it.
- May the tears you shed help release any pain.
- May you unabashedly advocate for yourself and not let yourself be dismissed by people who claim to be authorities because you are the authority when it comes to you.
- May you feel no shame in asking for help when you need it.
- May you always be deeply and passionately in love with yourself and show yourself grace when you make mistakes.
Of course, I could make many more wishes, but I’ll stick to 12 on this occasion.
