12 Wishes for My 12-Year-Old

child in pool with dog in background

A lot of things happened in 2008, but for me, the most significant thing that happened that year is that I became a mother. A mother to an extraordinary human being that is turning 12 this year. On this momentous occasion, I feel compelled to make 12 wishes for the child that I feel honored and humbled to call my daughter.

Mi Querida Put Pie,

  • May you hear “I love you” many, many times throughout your life from the many, many people who are bound to love you because you are so lovable.
  • May you say “I love you” to many, many people throughout your life because feeling and expressing love is always a good thing.
  • May you never lose your ability to say “no” when saying no is in your best interest.
  • May you say “yes” when it’s in your best interest even when fear is pushing you to say no.
  • May your relationship with your sister always be one of love and support.
  • May you always feel secure in the knowledge that you and your sister are the greatest loves of your parents’ lives.
  • May you continue to seek out knowledge and teach yourself how to do things with the same determination that you do now.
  • May laughing so much that it hurts happen so often that you develop abs of steel from it.
  • May the tears you shed help release any pain.
  • May you unabashedly advocate for yourself and not let yourself be dismissed by people who claim to be authorities because you are the authority when it comes to you.
  • May you feel no shame in asking for help when you need it.
  • May you always be deeply and passionately in love with yourself and show yourself grace when you make mistakes.

Of course, I could make many more wishes, but I’ll stick to 12 on this occasion.

Hi Claudya, Joining you from Traci’s blog.
Such beautiful words and great advice, if only all children were to have such a wonderful mum.
