As a family of four we are living a very magical time right now. My daughters are 3 and 5-years-old and to them anything that involves the entire family being together is a wonderful adventure. Even if it is something as mundane as going to the grocery store together, they act like we are some kind of adventure straight out of Jake and the Never Land Pirates. We become a band of hungry pirates and the shopping cart becomes a living pirate ship on wheels that we fill with edible gold doubloons. I love it because they remind me to appreciate the simple beauty in everyday moments involving the treasure that is familia.
You would think that it would be up to my husband and I to teach out daughters how to be adventurous and imaginative, but that’s simply not how it works. All we have to do is encourage them and in turn they help us be adventurous and imaginative. They also teach us how to be present and enjoy our time together, not just sometimes but always.
What can I say, my children are teaching me life lessons I had forgotten? Here are 3 life lessons from my daughters that I hope I never forget:
- Fun is not waiting to be had, it is waiting to be made. My girls not only default to happy, they default to fun no matter what they are doing. If we are cleaning their room, it all goes much faster if I not only let them have fun with it but encourage it.
- Lessons can be taught anywhere. My eldest invented a game we play in the car called TAXI! Basically, whenever you see a taxi, you yell TAXI! Each taxi is worth one point and whoever gets to 10 first wins. You can get bonus points for a train or school bus which are each worth two points. How awesome is it that my daughter invented a game that keeps us all entertained as we get from point A to point B and also gets her and her sister to use math skills?

You don’t have to go far to have adventures. My beautiful, brilliant little girls let me see the world through their eyes. They are excited and interested in life, which makes them exciting and interesting. I never feel like I have to go anywhere to have an adventure when I’m with my family, we are the adventure, we are the main attraction, it’s pretty awesome.

Love the games! It is amazing how creative kids can be when they’re allowed to be. And, on a side note, how nice that you’re talking and interacting with each other. That’s way better than everyone’s eyes on some device.
