A Mother Story

My mother keeps going in and out of retirement. Truly, I can’t keep up. She was a cosmetologist for decades and then her body just wouldn’t have it anymore, so she retired. But my mother is used to the hussle. She’s not the kind of woman to stay home and work on her projects. Oh no, she would find that far too boring.

So sometimes she goes back into business. Her entrepreneurial endeavors have included selling vitamins, baby-sitting a dove, selling sofas, and far too many other ventures to name. The thing is that my mother is a free spirit and anything that requires too much of a regular commitment from her, just isn’t going to work.

Sometimes she tells me about her new money-making adventures, but many times she doesn’t because she’s sick of hearing me sigh. She knows I’ll give a speech about how she should learn how to enjoy relaxing. That’s why it didn’t really come as a surprise to me to find out that she has OBVIOUSLY taken on another job, but I was surprised at how I found out.

I was on my lunch break and treated myself to Chinese food. At the end of the meal, I received this fortune…

A Mother StoryIt seems my mother has become a fortune cookie fortune writer. Why else would I have gotten this fortune that I’ve heard come out of my mother’s mouth countless times?

Or maybe she is now a waitress who sneaks individualized fortunes into the fortune cookies she serves.

I like the surprise ending I didn’t see that coming.  A dove?  really?  I constantly run ideas through my head.  Right now I was think of changing my name to Lord Gaga and going on tour.  You could bring that dove.

Not to offend any dove lovers out there, but the dove was not a nice house guest. Very noisy.

I’m glad my mother hasn’t become a fortune cookie writer. Blimey she’d be telling everyone to get stuffed.

Ha! That’s awesome that your mother is so ambitious and so active. I sometimes wished my mother had more of that so she would identify with more than being a mom.

    –A “fortune cookie writer”–   Fun!

The only thing better might be a “lipstick color writer!”

    How fun.

I would name one “Bitch Red” for sure!”

There is no doubt in my mind that you would be great at anything you tried. BUT… your forte is your humor. Your mama sounds like a pistol! I like her already. I see where you get your creativity from.

I’m telling you! There’s some truth to the saying that Mami knows best! I don’t think there’s any coincidence at all. And, I’m not even into superstition…
