Art My Friends Gave Me (Sundays In My City)

Frida Kahlo

Virgen de Guadalupe tin art

Virgen de Maria Mejoral poster

These three pieces of art adorn my home and I adore them. Each one of them was given to me by a different friend and they are priceless as far as I am concerned. Why? Because they were gifts from friends who saw them and just knew that I would love them. They make me feel blessed and lucky every time I look at them and think about how they came into my life.

I’m sure I have to give no explanation as to why someone would gift me a representation of Frida. I mean it’s Frida Kahlo for crying out loud, of course I’m going to like it. As for the religious iconography, you should know that I was raised Catholic and surrounded by these kinds of images throughout my childhood. I no longer consider myself Catholic or religious for that matter, but I still love the imagery involving women. I am interested in the female figures because I think they are actually subversive, but I won’t get into all of that right now.

I showed you mine, now show me yours.

Lovely – there’s a Frida exhibition on here at the moment – I need to get there (my first attempt failed when I ran out of time)

Go! I’ve seen her work in person twice and it brings me to tears. It’s so much more touching when you see it in real life.

Such lovely gifts. The very best gifts are those that connect with the recipient on a deep level and it is apparent your friends have done just that. Thank you for sharing your special gifts.
