I’ve become a bit of an expert on the subject of boots for wide calves because I love knee-boots and I have wide calves. I know from experience that shopping for boots when you have thick calves is incredibly frustrating. I’ve complained about it publicly before. The image above is from the time I went on Instagram to talk about how real the wide calf struggle is for so many of us. Here’s what I wrote in the caption:
The wide calf drama is real. Enlightened folks everywhere know that thick thighs save lives, but can we talk about how those thick thighs are usually attached to wide calves and how hard it is to find knee-high boots to fit those ample calves?

I’ve got wide calves, like 18” circumference kind of wide. I love knee-high boots, but finding ones that can accommodate the grandeur of my gams is VERY challenging. Especially since I abhor those stretchy ones that look more like glorified knee socks than actual boots. But there are companies out there that do not discriminate against my delectable shanks.

All legs deserve boots that fit.
In the process of buying myself a few pairs of wide-calf boots, I’ve done quite a bit of research, which I think will be useful to anyone else who is blessed with ample calves and wants knee-high boots.
My criteria for the boots on this list are as follow:
- The boots must be at least 17 inches in circumference at the widest part of the calf.
- They cannot be made of stretchy material or have an abundance of it because I personally do not like that look.
- They must be comfortable.
And now without further ado, my picks for the best boots for wide calves …

I own these boots too, but in black. What can I say, Sam Edelman does well by me? These boots have a kind of slouchy fit, so keep that in mind.

- 16 1⁄2″ shaft
Born North Wide Calf
Born makes excellent boots and their selection for larger calves is fantastic. I don’t own this particular pair, but I do have a similar pair and they are my go-to boots.

B.O.C. Austin Wide Calf Boot

Yup, I own these boots too. I know, I have a lot of boots. They are super comfy and great for casual looks. The top buckle lets you loosen or tighten them a bit.
- 19″ calf circumference
- 15″ shaft
Sofft Sharnell II
So, here’s the dealio with these – because of the lace-up detailing on the back, they fit narrow and wide calves. I don’t own these, but I did try them on and they fit after I loosened the laces as far as they would go.
Details:
- 13 1⁄4″ – 17″ calf circumference
- 15 ” shaft
Aerosoles Binocular
I own these in blue suede. Part of what makes them special is that they have a double zipper detail that lets you extend the width of the shaft by an extra 2 inches. Also, because they feature a platform wedge, the 2.25-inch heels are very comfortable.
Details:
- 15 1⁄4″ – 17″ calf circumference
- 15 ” shaft
