Thank you, thank you, thank you Heben Nigatu for creating the hashtag #CarefreeBlackKids2K16, a celebration of black youth living joyfully carefree moments. It’s a relief to witness joy after so much violence and murder.
It has been incredibly hard to remain hopeful after the fatal shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile by police officers and then the horrible misguided shooting of police officers in Dallas. Our eyes and souls have been ambushed by horror. So thank you Heben Nigatu for reminding us all that there is joy to be preserved, to be built upon, to be protected and grown.
Let’s work toward ending the horrors of this world we have created where the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter is so important even though some people keep trying to deny its relevance. Let’s work toward a world where the hashtag #CarefreeBlackKidsForever is implicit.
