When Bank of America announced that they were going to charge basic checking account customers a fee for using their debit cards, I was so mad that I ran a $5 Anti-Debit Card Fee Rant and Giveaway. Obviously, I wasn’t the only one that was livid because on November 1st B of A issued the following press release:
In response to customer feedback and the changing competitive marketplace, Bank of America no longer intends to implement a debit usage fee.
“We have listened to our customers very closely over the last few weeks and recognize their concern with our proposed debit usage fee,” said David Darnell, co-chief operating officer. “Our customers’ voices are most important to us. As a result, we are not currently charging the fee and will not be moving forward with any additional plans to do so.”

Nice! I love that so many people complained and used social media to get their voices heard. Love it! I’m still not loving B of A. I am loving that they realized that one or two basic checking account customers may not amount to much, but that put together we’ve got a whole lot of chump change and we can take our chump change to an institution that does not treat us like chumps. Way to rally people!
Good news to share on the making ends meet front! Unknown Papi got a second job and I scored another writing gig. I’ve had a stupid grin on my face for days because I’m so happy.
And now your Friday Fortune Cookie
(don’t forget to add “in bed” at the end, if you are so inclined):
A closed mouth gathers no feet.

Congrats on the jobs and gigs! That whole BofA thing was ridiculous. I’m not a fan nor am I a customer…thank goodness. I’ve been with Chase since they took over WAMU and I’ve been really happy with them so far.

Felicidades on the work and writing gig. Money is, after all, a good thing. Even Martha would agree to that.

That’s good the Bank changed that stupid fee charge. I hate when banks actually charge us for using their bank! So far, Dollar Bank doesn’t have a lot of extra fees for stuff which I am happy about.
Congrats to your husband on his new job and to you on your new writing opportunity!
Katharine says
Yay! So happy for your new gig and husbands job!
Have a great weekend!

Yay! Congrats on all good fortune coming your way….

Ahh good for you both.. congrats.
I suspect B of A will find another, more hidden way to gouge its customers before long. Their faux loyalty to customers was already breached with the attempted debit charge.
Jeanie says
Give yourself a pat on the back as one of many who caused the bank to back down.
Congrats on the good news for your family.

Congrats on your writing gig! My son banks at BOA and I was all ready to get him to move out of it! Now, I guess he can stay.
HOOTIN' ANNI says
LOL…I swear…ALL the politicians should receive that fortune cookie….in gross!!
And I understand that the banks were scared…running scared….I know of several friends that took all their money OUT OF THE BANK and moved it to a credit union. Wise…and no fees. These huge corporations are killin’ themselves.

Hope you have a quiet day for yourself this weekend. See y’over at my blog if you can find time.

Congrats to both of you!!! And yay to the people for fighting back at BOA!
La Principessa Errante says
Congratulations to both of you! I have been thinking of you as B of A has been forced to pull back on their reign of terror and greed. Don’t let it stop you from moving your money, it is still important for us to stand up and be heard through action. They will find other ways to nickel and dime us I am certain.
unknownmami says
Oh yeah, I already closed 2 accounts with them and I don’t trust them for one second. I’m sure they will find another way to suck me dry if I let them.

When I saw that story on the news, I actually thought of you and your blog post!

I am Canadain but I also love that social networking etc. made such a difference – you know if it had went in the US it wouldn’t have been long till our banks up here jumped on board!!

Writing gig – cool good work.
I think the occupy movement also got their attention.
Choleesa says
congrats on the writing gig, and to Unknown Papi for the second job….not an easy thing to find these days…. Might I ask what you will be writing about??
unknownmami says
I’ll tell you later. It’s coming up in a couple of weeks, but it’s not public knowledge yet so I can’t give details.
tracismixedbag says
Yay! For 2nd jobs. I hope you and Unknown Papi are able to get ahead. It’s not easy but sometimes it’s necessary. I just got 2 new part time jobs. I’m assuming you are with BofA, well after they decided not to charge $5 I got a letter saying they’re going to charge me for my checking account. Which is fine because I’m paying for the service of using a bank. But how convenient is it that they get flack for $5 now they are making $12 off of me every month.
unknownmami says
That’s the thing with them they are so disingenuous and full of crap. They really leave a bad taste in my mouth. I closed my daughter’s account with them and my husband closed his. I still have one account with them that I’ll keep until they piss me off again and a credit card that I will pay off and never use again. I just don’t feel like they are trustworthy.
Nezzy says
Doesn’t matter if I’m in bed or not, I’m a true pro at stuffin’ my foot in my mouth. ‘Just sayin’…. :o)
God bless and have a wonderful weekend sweetie!!!

If BofA cared about customers they would revoke their other rules – like the one where you can’t use a live teller if your account doesn’t have direct deposit. That means my husband who owns his own business and does not pull an income at this time has to use an ATM to do any personal transactions. Now his business account is a whole different matter and I have a beef with the numskull who lied through his teeth when setting up the credit card processing. I’m getting very ranty here, aren’t I? Sorry. I am quite happy with my little hometown credit union. No obnoxious fees and super friendly customer service. That’s all we want – friendly service and not have to pay to use our own money.

Great way to say it, Mami, chump change but not chumps. I am not interested in any of the big banks any longer. I bank at the small town bank in our town. And if they ever decided to charge us fees I would have my social security check mailed instead of direct deposit into the bank and I would just deal with everything in cash.

Congrats and congrats! That is so great!

That’s awesome about his job and your new gig. How do you find writing jobs? I have been kind of looking, but don’t know where to start.
unknownmami says
I wish I had useful advice for you, but I don’t. The writing jobs I’ve gotten have found me via recommendations from kind-hearted bloggers. I say just put it out there that you want to write and something will come. Not to get all New Agey, but The Universe is abundant.

Kudo’s on the jobs and gigs. I switched to a local credit union this month; I had been with my “big bank” for years.
