I went computer-free for the Thanksgiving day holiday. I spend quite a bit of time on the computer and I have to steal that time away in bits and pieces, but on the holidays I don’t want to be distracted. I want my family to know that I am choosing them and the present moment over anything else. The rest of the time…SCREW THEM! I’m kidding! You know I’m kidding, right?
We had a great time even though things didn’t go according to plan. Originally, we had planned on having dinner at a relative’s house in Sacramento, but the girls got sick and were still quite under the weather on Wednesday so we decided to stay home. Since we hadn’t planned on having dinner at home we weren’t prepared to make a turkey with all the fixings, but we got it together enough to make ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, and pumpkin pie. It ended up being a delightful holiday spent at home enjoying each others company, eating too much food, watching football, movies, and a Charlie Brown special.
I have a new post up at CafeMom, Top 10 Holiday Crossover Traditions, and another one at Miss Unlimited by Aiming Low, Thankful For, I realize you already have a million things to read, but I would greatly appreciate your love and support at those venues. I feel lucky to be there.
I’m hosting a giveaway for The Family Storybook Treasury. It is a great collection of children’s stories and includes an audio CD. Please stop by and enter if you are interested.
And now your Friday Fortune Cookie
(don’t forget to add “in bed” at the end, if you are so inclined):

Hope you’re all feeling better!
Thanksgiving is not about what you eat but who you’re with. Sounds like you had a good one 🙂 I’ll go over & show my support for the other sites 🙂

You are always wonderfully supportive. Thank you!

Sometimes the unexpected dinners are the best. Glad it turned out well!

I’ve been going low-tech lately, too. Haven’t been on the net much since giving up my FB page, and after having an almost non-functioning phone for two weeks, I’m not using my replacement much either.
Hope everyone’s feeling better!

tech-free days are awesome. even though my child thinks every screen is a touch screen …
nice post on cafe mom. funny, my husband and i are both latinos (different nationalities) and it feels like our holiday traditions are so different — from food to music to what day we actually celebrate and time we eat. good thing i win out most of the time 🙂

Hope everyone is feeling better… we made it through Thanksgiving but tonight my 5 year old is battling a low grade fever so my weekend plans are kaput for now…

As we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here in the UK I’ve become quite jealous reading about all the wonderful celebrations everyone else has been having whilst I’ve just been plodding along as usual.
Glad you had a good time.

I can relate to the computer stealing time away, I know it can be a big problem here.

Wow! I think your last-minute, turkey-free feast sounds fantastic! Happy (belated) Thanksgiving!

I have learnt that with kids, plans are merely a guide not necessarily a rule.

So sorry your girls didn’t feel good for Thanksgiving. I hope they feel better soon! If I lived near you I would have brought you over some of the feast we had. There was plenty to go around!

I would like a whole media free day myself. Mostly from the television—-but perhaps in all that quiet, I’d be tempted to sing, which wouldn’t be that pleasant for others. Good job for you, being present for your family as you celebrated Thanksgiving, though.
By the way, I’m thankful for you, and your wise and funny view of the world. Happy Whatever you Celebrate.

I am still playing catch up after the olive harvest and there was plenty to catch up on here. I think it is most important to be able to step away from our computers from time to time.

never say never (in bed) could lead to some interesting holidays…or more kids…
good on you for being with family…glad you had a good holiday

Oh, you know I am a bit of a fan(atic) when it comes to support. Probably genetic. I love unplanned days most, because they usually turn out to be the best, and better than the planned.
When I read all the Thanksgiving posts, I feel as though I am celebrating with you. I loved your list over at Aiming Low and because I am too lazy to sign in and comment at CafeMom, I just tweeted the post 😉
My Fridays are less fragmented for having the privilege of reading your posts.
God bless you and your family (and may you become the richest woman in the world!)
unknownmami says
Yeah, it is a lot of effort to comment at CafeMom. Thank you for the love and support as always. You are such a great example.

Wow, you sound like you pulled of an amazing meal in such a short time!! Congrats! I like your idea of tech free holiday. We ended up that way when we discovered our BIL does not have internet at his home. So much reading to catch up on 😉

Hey Beautiful. You’ve been popping in and out of my thoughts. Hope you are well. I’ll be by to catch up soon. I’ve been light on the computer the last week or so.

Hope your angels are all better — my Sonny-Bunny is sick now. We got to watch Charlie Brown, as well. Such a great tradition to share with the kiddos.
