Luna Pie, my 1-year-old, had a renogram last Friday and many of you have asked for an update. First of all thank you very much for your kind words and for keeping us in your thoughts.
My Luna Pie was amazing and she has officially become my littlest hero. Of course when we got to the hospital she had no idea we were there to do anything other than play. She wasn’t cooperating when they tried to put the hospital bracelet on her wrist so she was distracted and it was put on her leg.
There was some good news, she did not have to have a catheter! Huge sigh of relief from me, but the anesthesiologist said to me, “I’m sorry Mama, this is not going to be any fun and sometimes we have to put the child completely under.” Oh no, not my baby! Her kidney specialist had told me not to let them put her under. Fortunately, it never came to that.
They inserted a line into my baby’s hand in order to pump a radioactive tracer into her. She did not enjoy that, it took 3 people to hold her down and it was harder to watch her suffer than it was to give birth to her with no pain medication. She was strapped to a board and put under a device that would be photographing the passage of the tracer through her kidney (she only has one).
She cried, she struggled, she looked at me with fear and confusion in her eyes. I did my best to soothe her. At one point I pulled out a boob and shoved it in her mouth, I’m still nursing. Then something happened, it was like it dawned on her that no amount of screaming and struggling was going to get her out of this situation and she just surrendered. She accepted a cheese cracker from me, turned her head to watch a TV screen that was playing Sponge Bob, and she stayed relatively still for 45 minutes. I think I fell even more in love with her than I already was.
By the time we left, she was ready to forgive the technicians and even waved goodbye with her little bruised hand.
We will review the results with her doctor in the coming week. I’m feeling pretty optimistic.
Okay, I’ve got some other news to share. I’ve been selected to be a Britax Hispanic Digital and Social Media Outreach Blogger. I’ll tell you more about it later, but right now I’m super excited because they have invited me to their headquarters in Charlotte, NC in May. Can’t wait to go! Check out the Britax Los Lleva Seguros FB page when you get a chance.
And now your Friday Fortune Cookie
(don’t forget to add “in bed” at the end, if you are so inclined):
Life’s a trip, enjoy the ride.

Yay for baby and Mama. It is so hard to be the observer when your child is going through something. I am glad you both came through fine. 😉

Luna Pie is amazing! I’m so happy things went well. I’ll be praying the news is nothing but good and she never has to do that again.
Your coming South??? Awesome!!!!!!! I’m so excited for your news!

Wow – so much going on. She is sooo adorable, and obviously a good little trooper. Congratulations to you too, not only for all that you deal with as a Mom, but your blogging/writing accomplishments!

Thank you!

Oh poor baby!! And poor mama! I always hated being the ones to help hold down the kids while they get their shots. My children look at me wondering why mommy is helping these people hurt me?? I simply hate it!! I hope everything comes back positive. Is this just testing the function of her kidney?

So how does it feel to have given birth to a little tiny gangster? No, seriously, your baby is clearly more awesome than most grown ups I know.

Oh my what a brave little tiny girl. For a mom to witness acceptance in her child is a blessing in stressful times. She must be an intelligent being to know when she cannot change something and for her own comfort she needed to relax and go with it.

Oh I am so teary for both of you. It is one of the hardest things to go through…watching our little ones subjected to pain, poking and prodding. It is however just amazing the way so many of our children can be healed or treated and can live their lives. God Bless both of you!
Maggie says
Mami – it is SO hard to watch a little one in pain – my heart reaches out to you more than Luna Pie, she’ll forget, but you’ll remember. Hang in there. Hope the results are what you’d write yourself if you could.

What a little rockstar you have on your hands. Little ones can do such amazing things. I loved that you mentioned just shoving a boob in her mouth. Haaaa, totally took me back to traveling from Oregon to FLorida with each of my girls. On an 8 hour flight the whole shoving the boob in their mouth thing was sometimes the only thing I could think to. LOL.
YAY on your new Britax commitment. Can;t wait to hear about it!
