Google has announced that it is discontinuing Google Friend Connect for non-Blogger blogs come March of 2012.
WHAT THE FUNK!
Over 700 of you follow this blog via GFC and I’m getting the shakes thinking my feed will disappear from your dashboards or readers. It will be a sad and lonely blog without you. So if you are inclined to give gifts during the holiday season or just want to keep following this blog because the love affair is mutual, will you please consider following via my RSS feed and pehaps follow this blog’s google+ page as well?
I will gladly return the favor. You can leave me your info in the comments. Thank you.

Blogger messed up for me a very long time ago so I believe I have everyone in my reader including you.
unknownmami says
I hope I stay there. This change is supposed to occur in March. I’m not excited.

I’ve never been fond of the google+ thing anywho!
Eva Gallant says
I’m not sure I understand? Does that mean we will lose our google followers, or is it only if you are on another blog site other than blogger?
unknownmami says
You should be fine because if I am not mistaken you are on Blogger. Things should stay the same for you. It will affect me because I am not on Blogger.
Ben & Kay Duncan says
Really?? What on earth, google!!! I will happily do the feed. What about the network blogs thing?? Will that still connect folks or is that the same thing as GFC?
unknownmami says
The network blogs things will be fine because that is not a google product.
unknownmami says
Networked blogs will still work. Happy New Year!

I’m on Blogger, but if I wasn’t I’d follow you to the end of your brown bag 🙂
Tami Miller says
So if I understand this correctly, Google just wants you to use their blogging products?

I have circled your G+ page already. This is going to make those circles even more important.
Google Friend Disconnect – new name?

Wow, Google needs to play nice. That is not cool at all. I double checked and am positive I’m on your RSS Feed.
I hadn’t heard about this. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, right now everything is fine. They are getting rid of it in March and if I lose everyone I might just burst into tears.
Smitten Images says
Meaning what, exactly? You’ll disappear from my Google Reader.. which is where I follow you?
unknownmami says
That’s what I’m afraid of. I’m afraid of my feed disappearing from everyone’s reader that subscribed via GFC. I would like to think that won’t happen, but I can’t get a clear answer and what I can piece together is leaning toward disappearance. It won’t happen until March of next year.

This is awfully eerie. Just yesterday, I found it interesting that one could add Google Friend Connect to a WordPress blog. 🙂 I usually visit your blog by typing the url directly in my browser’s address bar. But hey, have you removed the widget now? I don’t see it. I am sure your connections will re-connect right away via the RSS/Google+/etc.
You’re too cool, Unknown Mami! We need you.
This is why I always subscribe by email.
unknownmami says
Yeah, I removed the widget. I figured I should stop having people follow that way.
Betsy @ Zen Mama says
I get your blog via my email so no worries but I can imagine what you’re going through!!
oceangirl says
Google’s slogan don’t be evil is fast disappearing and coming back at them from the other end. I have you on my bloglist, I dare them to touch that.
Beth says
Google is not making me happy these days! I hate the changes to Gmail. But I’m now following you on Google+.
unknownmami says
Thank you, Love.

It’s probably going to affect me too. Although I went back to Blogger with a custom domain, I’m still using my old GFC that I began on Wordpress. I asked around on the Google Help boards and no one knew if I would be affected, but it sounded like they thought I would be.
The other thing that worries me is that the Feedburner API has been deprecated. Which seems to mean that they won’t be developing it anymore. They say they don’t have any plans to remove its existing functionality, but that doesn’t give me much comfort that it won’t be pulled sometime not far in the future. It seems like all the blogs use Feedburner for its feeds. What happens if they go under? Is there something else we should be using?
No GFC outside Blogger. Feedburner getting kicked off to the side. What the Funk is going on??? Is everyone going to Tumblr?
unknownmami says
I don’t know, but I find it very disconcerting. I didn’t even know the whole feedburner issue. Google is bumming me out. Now I have to go research the issues with feedburner.
MaryAnneGruen says
I can hardly find anything on it other than what I said. Search Feedburner API deprecated. There are still so many people using it. It just seems if they’re not developing it anymore that at the very least it will have more problems. I was tracking a new blog that I’ve been building for someone else and it was scary how slow it was at updating.
