The first Saturday of every month at noon, you can take a tour of the 140 acre Green String Farm in Petaluma, CA. This farm is pretty special. It supplies produce to Alice Waters’ renowned Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California and other impressive eateries while at the same time having a farm store that is open to the public seven days a week.
Both the farm and the Green String method of sustainable farming used on the premises were started in 2003 by Bob Cannard and Fred Cline. The farm operates using “natural process agriculture” where the soil and plants are grown and maintained without pesticides or chemicals. The motto of the farm is “50% for humans, 50% for nature.” It’s all about reducing soil erosion, encouraging biodiversity and working with nature instead of against it. You’ll see weeds growing right along with the crops.
If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend you stop by and check the place out. You may not be there when a tour is being offered, but you can check out the farm store and buy something that’s been grown in a responsible and sustainable manner.

What a fantastic farm. We do our best to eat organically and buy sustainable items (like the wood for our deck). I it sad what we are doing to our planet in the name of progress, and really great to find places that put our world first.
