How to be a Great Dad: Daddy Skills

My husband, Unknown Papi, is a great dad! He has mad daddy skills. I find it encouraging that more and more fathers seem to be taking pride in being fantastic fathers.

So what does it take to be a great dad? I grew up without a father so all I can tell you is what I observe at home right now as I watch Unknown Papi parent our daughters.

Great Dads…

  • Are all up in it! They are not afraid of getting dirty. They change diapers, clean spit up, and wear the evidence on their clothing without shame.
  • They are present. Even when they are tired, they are never too tired to be there for their kids.
  • They treat their baby momma with respect.
  • They know how to improvise.

Improvisation is key. Unknown Papi was recently at the park with both our girls and our eldest, Put Pie, freaks out when it gets windy and her hair gets in her face. Unknown Papi didn’t have a hair tie, but he needed to find a way to keep Put Pie’s hair out of her face before there was a melt down. Behold his solution…

He tied her hair back in a cute ponytail with baby wipes because that’s all he had handy. Tell me that’s not exhibiting mad daddy skills!

Mad props to all the awesome dads out there!

Those are 4 great traits. There have been many good cultural changes in dad’s role in parenting since my dad’s time in the 50’s.

Such a great dad, those are lucky girls. You got my vote – good luck. Right now you’re number 2, we’ll have to get more folks logging in for you.

You gotta give it up for the mad dads who are super bad (as in good) with the kiddos. I am married to one of those too. Great post! I don’t even think I would have thought of using a baby wipe. LOL.

I had to laugh at the hair bow! How creative is that??? I was so fortunate to have a wonderful daddy that I miss every day and I’m sorry you didn’t have your dad! I now have a husband so much like my daddy and it’s a wonderful thing!
