A lot of things change when you become a mother, some expected (so I won’t bore you with those) and some totally UNEXPECTED, like what happens to laundry once you breed.
Are you ready for this? Once you breed, so does your dirty laundry AND it never stops!!!
It’s actually kind of horrifying. I mean, you thought you knew how to handle your laundry, how to stay on top of it or how to run and buy new underwear when all else fails, but once you become a parent, you have to be in charge of the dirty laundry at all times or the dirty laundry will take over your LIFE.
It starts to breed whenever you are not looking, just when you thought you got to the bottom of the hamper you realize that there is really no such thing as the bottom of a laundry hamper; it’s like the mythical El Dorado: a paradise of your dreams that you might catch glimpses of, but never actually get to see for very long.
So what’s a parent to do? Give up, hire out, join a nudist colony? No, you make peace with your ropa sucia, you get all Zen and stuff with it and find a way to simplify the process, to embrace the process and to even kinda sorta enjoy the process.
How you say? Like this:
- Pretty up the place. You are going to spend a lot of time in your laundry room so why not make it a place that makes you smile? My washer and dryer are delightful to look at, I covered them in polka dots so that I always feel peppy when I see them.
- Make it an everyday thing. You know how you brush your teeth every day and eat every day and don’t feel all that burdened by it? Well, if you do laundry every day, the same kind of thing happens; it’s just a quick thing that you do every day without even thinking about it too much and that way it never builds up into insurmountable mounds of mugre. Every morning when I get up, I start a load. Later in the day, I put it in the dryer and when it’s done, I quickly fold it and put it away. Really, it doesn’t end up feeling like much because it’s split up throughout each day for just minutes at a time.
- Set yourself up for quickie success. Have everything you need to use for laundry on hand and within reach. Think things like lingerie wash bags for your delicates, clothespins for things you want to air dry and even something as convenient and time saving as Gain flings! Using Gain flings! cuts down on my laundry time because I don’t have to measure a dang thing; they are pre-measured with just the right amount of detergent, Oxiboost and odor fighting Febreze, plus they work for both colors and whites.
- Above all, keep it safe. Laundry rooms can be pretty and useful, but more than anything they need to be safe, especially if you have kids. Please be sure to talk to your kids about laundry room safety and to store chemicals like detergents out of their reach. It’s also a super good idea to always have the number to poison control (1-800-222-1222) and your pediatrician handy just in case.
And that, my dears, is how I’ve come to terms with my breeding laundry. I’ve made peace with it and I deal with it daily and quickly so I can do more interesting things like go on adventures with my family where we will surely make more dirty laundry.
