I did it, I finally made a pallet garden. And you know what? It was totally easy. I’ve wanted to make a pallet garden ever since I first saw one. I think it is a great way to reuse a pallet and a creative way to make to make a vertical garden.
My whole family got in on the project, even the 2-year-old. Let me walk you through our journey, in case you would like to make a pallet garden of your own.
What you will need:
- A pallet
- Landscape fabric
- Staple gun with staples
- Soil (one large bag of soil was enough for our half pallet)
- Enough plants to fill the spaces in between the slats (we used succulents and moss and I eyeballed it, but I would say around a 6-pack for every slot opening and more for the very top of the pallet)
Once you have all of your supplies ready, you will start off by cutting enough landscape fabric to cover the entire back of the pallet and the bottom. You want to leave enough overhang on the fabric so that you can fold it under on the edges before you staple it onto the pallet.
You see how we folded it under? Then you want to go ahead and staple the fabric onto the pallet pretty taut, not loosey-goosey.
Once you have the landscape fabric secured snuggly, flip the pallet (you are going to work with the pallet laying horizontally, not vertically), and go ahead and fill the very top opening of the pallet with as many plants as you can. I mean you want to cram those babies in so that they have barely any give.
It’s hard to tell from the picture, but trust me that we filled the top opening until there was no space to put another plant in.
Next, start filling the rest of the pallet with soil. Nice and full.
Once you’ve filled the pallet with soil, start putting your plants in.
We just crammed those succulents in. Then as my husband would say, water da suckas!
We let our pallet rest like that for about a week and then we stood it up and put it where we wanted it. Don’t forget to water your pallet garden regularly so it doesn’t dry out.

This is so very pretty, Claudya! I could keep looking at it. Please do photos of when the plants grow. I wondered – when they grow – then what happens? Does the pallet get covered with lush succulent suckas?

Where did you get the pallet? Does Lowe’s sell them? I see all these pallet projects on Pinterest but I have no idea where they come from, should I raid a warehouse? 😉

I want to try that. I’ve heard that you have to be careful about the pallet you get as some are treated and when watered they can release chemicals that would harm the plants. Could you tell me where you got your pallet? I want to do herbs in mine so I’d have to be careful because they’d be consumed.
I got my pallet from a friend who works where lots of pallets are delivered. I did not put anything that I was going to consume in it because I did not know who the wood had been treated.
