I’m Flippin’ for My New Critts Chanclas

Critts shoes

I received a complimentary pair of Critts to facilitate this review. No other compensation was received and the following are my thoughts and mine alone. Okurrrr?

Guess who has a new pair of chanclas? ME! I received them as a gift from their inventor Carter Waugh, who happens to be 11 years old and was 8 years old when he invented them. Imma tell you about my new chanclas in a bit, but just in case you don’t know what chanclas are, let me explain. They are what some people call flip-flops and others call slippers or slippahs and there are even those that call them thongs. These new chanclas of mine are called Critts and when I say that they are new, I mean that they are new to me and new to this world.

Meet Critts!

Critts are a kind of hybrid adventure sandal. Think flip flop meets a weatherproof foam clog, but better. Carter came up with the concept behind Critts when he was on a family vacation and was frustrated that his flip flops would either break or come off his feet when he was busy exploring. He wasn’t crazy about the waterproof foam clogs he had either because they would give him blisters and weren’t particularly supportive.

Then Carter had a lightbulb moment.

What if he could have a shoe that slips on easily, doesn’t slide off all the time, covers his toes and provides enough support so that he can run and jump without hurting his feet? And that’s how Critts came to be. They’re called Critts, short for critter, because you can customize each pair with different critter cutouts and “Critter” is also Carter’s nickname courtesy of his older brother.

Do Critts have any special features?

Why, yes, yes they do. Let me tell you about a few.

  • They have a toe bar to help keep them on and a Vibram outsole to help with comfort, support and stability
  • The upper part is made of synthetic leather and lined with neoprene – making them easy to clean
  • The footbed is wrapped in leather to help prevent sweating and blisters
  • The cushioned insole is made out of a double layer of SweetFoam, a kind of memory foam that is made from sustainably and equitably sourced sugarcane from Brazil
  • You can customize your Critts with different color and critter choices
  • The critter-shaped holes are cute and provide breathability

So, what do I think of Critts?

Well, I’m not 11 years old and I’m not climbing trees or anything like that, but I got stuffs to do and I found that while I was getting my stuffs done, Critts stayed on my feet and were comfortable. I’m a big fan of Vibram soles in general and the soles on Critts did not disappoint; they have great grip and keep this mother from slippin’ and sliding.

I chose to get my Critts in purple with little wine glass cutouts. There wasn’t really a break in period as they were comfortable from the start. I will say that in my opinion, they run a tad on the small side, so that’s something to keep in mind when ordering.

Because I’ve been staying home as much as possible lately, these have become my indoor chanclas. They will remain my indoor chanclas because we’re a no outdoor shoes inside the house kind of household, but I certainly wouldn’t mind a pair that I can wear outdoors and my daughters have both been asking for a pair of their own.
