This post is part of a sponsored collaboration with Comcast. They asked me to attend LTX Fest 2019 while it was in San Francisco on 10/8-10/9 and cover the event on my social media channels as a sort of roving reporter.
What is LTX Fest?
LTX Fest is the “nation’s premier event celebrating Latinx contributions to technology, innovation and business” put together by Kapor Center, Latinas in Tech and Latino Community Foundation.
Why did Comcast sponsor the event?
Comcast was one of the sponsors because they “believe that a diverse and inclusive company is a more effective company.” I cannot argue with that. In fact, I wholeheartedly support that belief.
LTX Fest was a was a four-day event. I was only able to attend the first two days of the event which took place in San Francisco. Those two days were enough to leave me feeling all kinds of inspired and armed with the knowledge that we all, as individuals, have the power to change the world.
How? Well, here are six of the key takeaways from the first two days of LTX Fest 2019:
1. We have to change.
In order to change the world, we have to change ourselves. Are you a woman of color that wants to see women of color in positions of power and getting paid as much as their white male counterparts? If so, then you need to ask for that raise, you need to ask for that promotion. Sitting around and waiting to be noticed isn’t helping you or anyone else out. To be an advocate for all, start being an advocate for yourself. Does the thought of asking for these things make you feel uncomfortable? Get comfortable being uncomfortable.
2. Collaboration is where it’s at.
When we work together, we win together. It really is that simple. To make real lasting change, it’s not about competition, it’s about collaboration.
3. Don’t wait to be offered a chair.
In order to be represented, we need a seat at the table. Those seats are scarce and rarely offered to those who need to be represented the most, so show up with your own dang chair.
4. Can’t find a table to sit at?
Sometimes you show up with your own chair, only to find that there is no table. Does that mean you give up? Nope, in that case, you need to create your own table. That’s one of the times when working together with other likeminded people can help you win together.
5. Philanthropy is your birthright.
When you think of a philanthropist, perhaps you think of someone like Bill Gates because he has so much money to give, but never forget that you come from a long line of philanthropists. Think of the people in your family who will always feed anyone that shows up, pitch in to help a neighbor, give money to whoever needs it – they are all philanthropists and so are you.
6. Make change happen!
As you go about the business of being you, make change happen. Don’t play small, don’t pass up opportunities, been seen, be an example.
