The Mechanical Museum or Musée Mécanique located at Pier 45 in San Francisco is a truly magical place. Admission is free and the museum is home to “one of the world’s largest privately owned collections of mechanically operated musical instruments and antique arcade machines.”

Way back before I had kids, the collection used to be located in the lower level of the Cliff House over by Sutro Baths, but then renovations happened and in 2002 the Musée Mécanique moved to it’s current location in Fisherman’s Wharf. Being a local I don’t get out to Fisherman’s Wharf very often because TOURISTS EVERYWHERE, but now that I have kids it’s totally worth it to head on over with a bag full of quarters. I love this place and now my girls love it too.
