What can you tell about a business by standing outside of its brick and mortar store?

In the case of this particular store, you would notice the name: Milagros de México. Perhaps you would be intrigued by the miracles promised and take a closer look.

You’d look at the window display and surmise that family health is being promoted and that Spanish is spoken.

What if you knew that this particular business has 4 storefronts located in different cities throughout the Bay Area? Would you notice their choice of locations?

Perhaps you’d notice that Milagros de México is dedicated to serving communities with a large Latino population.

You might happen to catch a glimpse of one of their monthly free glucose test offerings (Diabetes Fair.) They test an average of 100 people per store.

You’d be able to form an impression of Milagros de México and it would be a good one, but you still wouldn’t have the whole picture.

I know because I experienced Milagros de México (MdM) from the outside, but it wasn’t until I walked into their San Francisco location that it all came together for me. The second I walked into the store, the scent captivated me and I felt transported to another time in my life. To a time when I was the very young daughter of a single Mexican mother and she would take me to the farmacia on our visits to México.

Milagros de México smells like the farmacias of Mexico smelled to me all those years ago: of herbs and cleanliness, of hope and health. My mother chose to go to those farmacias for tonics and vitamins to keep me healthy because at the time where we lived in the United States a place like Milagros de México did not exist.

I tell you all this because Milagros de México has opened an eCommerce store, which will make them accessible to many more, but you might not be able to tell everything I’ve shared with you just by visiting their online site.

I’ve had the pleasure of corresponding with Mauricio Simbeck, one of the wonderful people behind MdM and he was kind enough to answer the following questions.

When was the company founded, by who, and which is the original location?

The company was founded in 2010 by a group of Latino entrepreneurs. Milagros de México’s (MdM) opened its first store in Redwood City, CA. MdM opened locations in Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco in 2011 and plans a moderate expansion in Northern California over the next 2-3 years.

What was the inspiration behind the business? Why Milagros de México as opposed to just selling products and supplements already on the market?

The inspiration was our desire to bring health to the underserved Latino population. While there are good health & wellness brands manufactured in Mexico, we saw a need for a trusted, multi-sku line manufactured in the USA, under strict quality guidelines.

Could you tell me the history behind your in-store clinics? Did you start offering the service as soon as you opened or did the clinics come later?

The Access Health (AH) clinics are located inside MdM. While they are a separate company (leases space from MdM), both AH and MdM goals are the same: bring health to the underserved, often un-insured Latino population. AH opened its clinics at the same time as our Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco store.

I notice that you only carry MDM products (online). How are your products developed, where are they produced, etc…?

Our stores carry several brands. However, we chose to sell only MdM branded products in our website since these are products created with our customers in mind, with the highest quality at the best price. MdM also has a product guarantee in case customers don’t like the product.

In your mission statement you say you believe in giving back to the communities in which you serve, could you elaborate on how you do that?

We donate 1% of our sales to non-for profit organizations located next to our stores. We donate 1% of our on-line sales to the Latino Community Foundation.

What prompted you to start the e-commerce site?

We believe there is not a health & wellness e-commerce site with a multi-sku line serving the Latino population and the nature of the Internet will allow us to reach customers in every city in the US.

    I look at a store and the first thing that impresses me is how junky the windows are. If there is little activity on the windows, I am not so interested in walking inside. If however, the windows are full of signs and dust, I know that place is my kind of place. I like thrift stores and get excited to think that I might find a treasure inside a store. I take multivitamins and the reason is that I don’t always eat healthy, living alone and cooking for myself. I would rather eat cheese and crackers instead of cooking a meal. So even if I were to win the family prize, I would take the vitamins myself and use the VISA gift for groceries.
