Mundane Details of my Life

Yesterday, I wrote a to-do list post and mentioned that I had to go to work. Apparently, this was news to some of you. I thought I’d share some mundane details of my life just in case you are interested.

I started this blog in April of 2009. My daughter was 7 months old and I desperately needed a creative and social outlet that would work around my new Mami-hood lifestyle.

At the time, I was working about 20 hours a week from home as an independent contractor doing “translation” style-work, but not really. It was more like I would listen to a computer generated voice and give feedback on whether or not a person with an accent from Mexico or Spain would say it that way. I was also going on auditions for commercials, voice-overs, and other such things. I also had another job which I still have which requires me to work outside the home one to two days a week. I work outside the home on days that my husband is off so that he can watch our daughter. Wait, that’s not it! I had one more job where I was a personal assistant to an “important” man, which means I would buy him socks, groceries, run errands, and keep his car serviced. Oh and in addition to all that I was taking care of my daughter 5 days a week.

It sounds like a lot, but I could get most of my “work” done before my husband and daughter got up.

Things are different now. I still take care of my daughter at least 5 days a week and I work outside the home 1 to 2 days a week. I no longer have the work from home job, much to my dismay that contract ended in July of 2010. The personal assistant job ended in August of 2009. I have also not been going on auditions because of some health issues I’ve had involving my eyes, iritis and corneal ulcers to be exact. Recently, my agent asked if I was still interested in going out on auditions and I said that for now since my eye issues come and go and I happen to be pregnant that I am open to going on voice-over auditions or any gig that needs a pregnant woman with a funky left eye.

So that’s where I’m at now. I went from having 3 part time jobs to just one part time job. I’d love to find another work from home job as we could really use the income. I still love to act, but right now going on auditions and hustling for jobs isn’t really doable or I just don’t have the ganas (desire). I’m grateful for the part-time job that I do have, it provides me with a bit of income and gets me out of the home and interacting with adults, plus it’s in an arts organization so I get to see some pretty cool things.

Any questions? If you leave me a question I’ll answer it in an upcoming post.

    Here’s a question:

Have you ever met any of your followers, or anyone whose blog you follow? If not, would you ever, or do you wish to remain anonymous?

    (okay…I guess technically, that’s 2 questions 😉

I wish I had at least a part time work at home job. Lord knows, I’ve tried so many of them, including being an Amazon Affiliate, but they all turned out to be scams, or you have to sell something, or you have to PAY to be able to get information on how to do it. Really irritating. I do have a day job, but basically I do nothing but explore the internet when I am not supposed to. There just isn’t enough work going around.

Have you ever thought of working at any doctors office or hospital as a translator? I went to school with a friend who went to various area hospitals and would translate whatever the doctor was saying to the family and of course what the family was saying to the doctor. I don’t know who paid her but she got paid VERY WELL doing this job. I was like, “You’re making that kind of money and are still in college?”

I think she got paid something like $30 per visit, but there would be days she’d be with 4-5 different families in one hospital……and of course there were days when she’d sit at home all day too.

Yea, will you always be anonymous? Or will you ever post all the clips from commercial’s and voice over’s you’ve done? Will you ever show us who YOU are?

I know I may sound like a big dork because I’m a librarian, but have you tried the library? I know it’s not in the home but there are normally quite a few part-time jobs and being bi-lingual, you’d be well loved…well, besides those of us who read your blog. 🙂

Hey, I’m a big dork too. I have looked into it, but I haven’t necessarily been a good fit for some of the jobs offered. I’ll keep looking, though.

I was so happy the Giants won. There is a big parade for them today and the city is going crazy. I’ve never seen so many people.

I currently work from home as a customer service agent and love my job. I’d be happy to give you information on it if you were interested! I get paid hourly and absolutely love it. It’s easy for me to be with my kids as well as work! I’ wish I could go on auditions but my voice sounds like a kid voice sometimes and I’m not even close to looking like an actress….lol 🙂 If you want more info you can find my contact info thru my website 🙂

I would love to work from home writing for a magazine or a news paper, but is it so difficult to get an article accepted and published. I have the luck to be travelling a lot these days and I would like to write about my journeys. For instance tomorrow I am off to Paris, then next week to Italy and then mid-December I will be in San Francisco :D!
I would love to write about all of these places but I don’t know which angle to focus on and to which magazines to send them to.

Can you suggest anything that you think people might like reading in a magazine? Do you think that writing for online-magazines is easy to get articles published and do you know of any good online magazine :)?

I wondered about your job situation. I work outside the home anywhere from 5 to 30 hours per week depending on my caseload. Right now I’m low and I need to pick back up in order to pay for Christmas.

when I was looking into trying to supplement income, I did a lot of studying about at home jobs and so much came up as scams. I happen to work at home but its only because I “paid my dues” in offices, et al in years past and have the experience to do what I do (medical transcription). Still its 40 hours a week and I clock in and clock out like if I worked out of the house

hang in there, you never know when something might come your way

Good Luck on the job search! I find most of the work from home jobs to be scams. I have the best luck with past companies that I know I perfectly capable of completing tasks without having to sit at their desk.

Working from home saves the expenses of working out of the home and you could be there for your daughter too. A voice over job would be pretty cool.

Your mundane life sounds pretty good to me! We can all use the money, but I think Put Pie and Baby Put Pie will take up a good amount of your time. I think it is wonderful how Papi helps out on his days off. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your “star” comment. It made my day!

It’s tough juggling work and kids. I work 30 hours a week, and go into the office two days a week. Luckily, my boss is pretty relaxed and lets me work at home the rest of the time.

i’ve learned to to take life as it comes to you, especially with work. you never know what’ll happen tomorrow — more work, less work, better pay, no pay. so living below your means is a good rule of thumb when times are good.

you forgot to mention you are also a writer 🙂 blogging is writing and especially when you have a full plate in front of you, it is definitely work. good work, though.

It’s not easy for us moms. Working from home can be lonely, but working outside the home is really hard if you have small kids. Hang in there and good luck finding an at home job!

The work from home job that I had just fell into my lap because I had done it for the same company once in their offices and they created software that allowed the contractors to do remotely. I think those types of jobs are hard to come by.

I think we women are pretty amazing creatures. I’ve spent the past 13 years doing bits of work here and there — some from home, some part-time — so I can help support the family and be there for my children. It’s a blessing to be able to do it, isn’t it? A little crazy sometimes, yes. But a blessing.
