Our friends invited us over to their house for a good old fashioned tamalada and it was so much fun. Just in case you don’t know what a tamalada is, it’s basically a tamal-making party.
Not gonna lie, I haven’t really been to a tamalada since I was a child and most of us were tamal-making novices, but with the guidance of one of the participants, we made some delicious tamales and not just of one kind. We made like five different kinds including dessert ones.
Some came out a little wonky and not so photogenic, but as soon as you take a bite of them you don’t care what they look like because YUM! I’m so stoked because even after eating a bunch, I have enough to serve some for our Christmas Eve (AKA Mexican Christmas) dinner.
Aside from making good food, the best part was hanging out with our friends and bonding. I’m hoping this becomes a yearly tradition for our families.

Wow, those are some big tamales and you’re right, who cares if they’re wonky (except my mother of course) what’s important is the taste. The fun of a tamalada is getting together with others, sharing stories, and food. Making tamales with family and friends has been a generational tradition in our family and a two-day event.
