As a proud public school mom of two elementary school children, I am excited to be partnering with Revolution Foods on this sponsored post to share with you how they are making school lunches healthier for kids in San Francisco and nationwide.
First off let me introduce you to Revolution Foods, in case you aren’t familiar with them.
Meet Revolution Foods:
Revolution Foods is responsible for creating, producing and delivering 2 million healthy, freshly prepared meals per week to schools and community sites across the nation including my beloved San Francisco Bay Area. By making great-tasting, kid-inspired, chef-crafted foods accessible to all they hope to improve the wellness of SFUSD students. They only use real food ingredients in their meals including fresh local produce, high-quality proteins, rBST-free dairy products and no artificial flavors or colors.
Kid-Inspired, Chef-Crafted
Healthy food is great, but if kids won’t eat it what’s the point? Trust me, I’ve made my kids tons of healthy food at home that they won’t touch no matter how big of a tantrum I throw and I can throw a much bigger tantrum than the grouchiest 2-year-old.
That’s where the whole kid-inspired, chef-crafted element comes in. Here’s how it works: Revolution Foods includes kids at every step of the recipe development and execution process to make sure that the recipes they create will actually be eaten.
Menus items range from city to city because the company’s chefs use the input they receive from the students to create meals that are specific to that region. That serves two purposes: it ensures that the meals are culturally relevant to the location they are serving and it also helps to broaden kids’ palates. I don’t know about you, but I can use all the help I can get when it comes to introducing my kids to more culturally diverse foods.
Let’s talk about Their Efforts in SF
Throughout this school year, Revolutions Foods listened to student feedback about their meals and responded with over 100 new or reformulated recipes. They also added more menu options. Lunch menus now have a third entrée choice, which considering that you can’t please all kids with the same thing is great.
For example, my kids are both really picky eaters but they aren’t even picky in the same ways because that would make my life WAY too easy. So, while my eldest would go for the new Revolution Foods Smothered Burritos, my youngest doesn’t want them and would much rather have the new pepperoni pizza with turkey-beef pepperoni.
Like I said, you can’t please all kids with the same thing. Although, that’s the case with adults too, so why should we expect anything different from kids?
No Mystery Meat to Worry About
As a parent, I appreciate the company’s transparency about ingredients, I know they are dedicated to using clean label ingredients so I don’t have to worry that they are eating the dreaded mystery meat that I used to get from my school cafeteria when I was a student.
I encourage you to visit the Revolution Foods website to learn more about the company and maybe even use some of their techniques to get your kids to eat healthy meals at home. I’ve started developing and tweaking dinner recipes with my kids that they actually eat because I incorporated their input and feedback.
