We have been sheltering in place in San Francisco for 6-ish weeks now. During this time of staying at home to help slow the spread of coronavirus, I’ve been doing what I call shelter in place travels. Basically, I use my imagination and photo editing apps to travel to different locations without actually leaving my home.
This week, my imagination would not let me stray far from home, which is the beautiful city of San Francisco. My imagination kept me close to home because I’ve been thinking a lot about what it will be like for us all when shelter at home restrictions start loosening up. If I am being completely honest, I’m not looking forward to it at all. I’m worried that all our efforts to flatten the curve will be for naught if we go back to business as usual sooner than we should and that our healthcare system will be overwhelmed.
I appreciate that Governor Gavin Newsom of California is more cautious than many other governors about how to proceed given our current circumstances. I also understand that many people are desperate to go back to work because you can’t pay for anything without money.
This virus, though? This virus is so easily spread and has already killed so many people and it will continue to kill many more. I cannot rest easy when I know that loosening social distancing restrictions will claim many more lives. I cannot take a “survival of the fittest” kind of attitude towards it and just shrug my shoulders. How can I when I do not believe that the lives of “the fittest” have more value than the lives of those who have not and will not survive Covid-19?
So, so many thoughts on the subject. For the moment, I will leave you with my latest shelter in place travels.
On Day 39, I visited the Bay Bridge.
