Summer is poppin’ and so are the palomitas on my stovetop. El marido and I have been enjoying summer night dates at home. We wait until the girls have gone to sleep and then I make stovetop popcorn with nutritional yeast that we enjoy with a bit of Sutter Home vino while we watch movies. Sounds basic, but my popcorn is OUTSTANDING. No, really, I’m known for my popcorn and pretty soon you’ll be known for your popcorn too because I’m going to share the recipe with you.
Before I get to the popcorn recipe, let me tell you about the wine we’ve been enjoying with it on our summer date nights: Sutter Home Cabernet Savignon in the mini bottles. I am loving the convenience of Sutter Home mini bottles because we can affordably stock up on a different varietals and have them on hand for guests or ourselves. They are perfect for backyard BBQs, picnics, impromptu get-togethers with friends and a little husband and wife alone time.
Now, for my popcorn! Making stovetop popcorn means that I can season it to perfection with olive oil, butter, sea salt and nutritional yeast. If you’ve never tasted nutritional yeast, you are in for a treat. It’s a non-dairy seasoning with a nutty, cheesy flavor that can’t be beat and it’s actually good for you.
One tablespoon of nutritional yeast has only 20 calories, no salt, 3 grams of protein and lovely B vitamins. You can buy it at most health food stores or well-stocked super markets. I’m a fan of the one made by Bragg, but there are other brands and you can even buy the loose yellow flakes in bulk at some stores.
Stovetop Popcorn With Nutritional Yeast
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
- 2 tablespoon olive oil for popping the corn (most people use vegetable oil for popping corn, but I’m a rebel and go with the olive oil)
- 1 tablespoon (or more or less if you’d rather) of melted butter mixed with an equal amount of olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sea salt or kosher salt (treat yo’ self, these salts taste so much better than table salt)
- 1/4 cup or more of nutritional yeast (I like a lot of nutritional yeast on my popcorn and sprinkle it on in layers)
Directions:
Add oil to a large stockpot or a hand crank stovetop popcorn maker over medium heat. Add the popcorn kernels and shake them around to coat them with the oil. I use a hand crank popcorn maker, which makes this really easy ’cause all you gotta do is crank. If you are using a stockpot, you are going to have to shake the pan around manually. Please take precautions not to burn yourself. Once the kernels start popping, keep the cranking or shaking going so that unpopped kernels get to the bottom of the pan and the popped corn doesn’t burn.
Once the popcorn is done popping, I recommend drizzling the mixture of melted butter and olive oil over the popcorn while it’s still in the pot or popcorn maker as well as sprinkling it with salt. Then pour the popcorn out a little at a time into a large bowl and sprinkle each layer with nutritional yeast. The butter and olive oil mixture will help the yeast stick to the popcorn and pouring it in layers guarantees that you cover the popcorn evenly.
That’s it, all that is left is to enjoy with your beverage and beloved of choice.
Cheers and provecho to you and yours!

Sounds perfect. We make hot air popcorn and I use a little butter with the Nutritional Yeast on mine. I really love it!
