Hola Chulas y Chulos! My chancla and I have been having a rough week. I for one feel like I have taken quite the paliza from life. My husband had emergency surgery for an internal hernia last Thursday. All the worry, crying and nursing has left me spent. Regardless, my chancla and I do have a few things to share with you for this week’s The Flying Chancla Report because we love our hijos de la chanclada.
- Have you watched Estéreo Bomba’s video for “Soy Yo” yet? It’s freakin’ awesome. I made my husband and daughters watch it because I love that it is a celebration of uniqueness.
We all need to be better about letting others rock their authentic selves without going all judgmental on them. Also, as the mother of two brown daughters I’m thrilled with the casting of the video’s heroine. You can read more about my thoughts on this fun video and why I think it’s a great conversation starter with kids over on Mom.me.

- OK, I can’t pretend that my chancla and I are not a little pissed that no one ever told us about jicaletas. We found out about them because of a jicaleta post on WeAreMitú.
You may be wondering, what the heck is a jicaleta? Basically a jicaleta is a slice of jicama with a popsicle stick on it that turns it into a paleta. The jicama is then covered in chamoy syrup and sprinkled with chamoy powder and chile. In case you don’t know what chamoy syrup or powder are, they are used as a savory condiment and are made from pickled fruit. Chamoy might not sound delicious, but it is mouthwateringly so—TRUST!
I, like many Mexicans, love me some fruit with chile and limón so jicaletas sound like heaven to me. Just look at some of the examples my chancla and I found on Instagram. Also, jicaletas come in all kinds of shapes and sprinkled with all kinds of flavors.

I have no idea when I will come across a jicaleta vendor over here in San Francisco. I may just have to figure out how to make some of these for myself.
