Hola Chulas y Chulos. This week’s The Flying Chancla Report is dedicated to Juan Gabriel, whose death on August 28 in Santa Monica, California hit us like a chanclazo straight to the heart. He was 66 years old.
I don’t remember a time when Juan Gabriel’s music wasn’t a part of my life and that makes me feel blessed because dammit he made some beautiful music: the kind of music that could make you spontaneously dance, cry and have all the feels.
I remember being elementary school age and singing along to “Inocente Pobre Amigo” as it blared from our record player speakers and crying my eyes out. What the heck did I know about love and betrayal at that age? Nothing, but Juan Gabriel made me channel the emotions he sang about and I felt powerful.
