Perhaps one day mothers and fathers will be able to download video of our kids directly from our eyes or memory, but until then we must rely on the aid of a video camera. I carry a compact video camera in my purse at all times and I still manage to miss many of my daughter’s momentous firsts. By the time I get to the camera, the moment is over and cannot be recreated. My husband is better about randomly videoing her, but he still misses most firsts.
Here’s a current list of the top 10 firsts that never made it to video:
10. Her first smile.
9. The first time she gave me a kiss.
8. The first time she said, “Mama.”
7. The first time she waved goodbye.
6. The first time she mimicked my snoring (not that I snore).
5. The first time she opened a door all by herself.
4. The first time she ran toward the door yelling, “Papa!” because her daddy was home.
3. The first time she gave me a pity laugh.
2. The first time she brought me a flower.
And the number one first that never made it to video, that I wish had (to torture her with in later years):
1. The first time she picked her nose and then stuck the offending finger in her mouth!
