Tree Lighting at Winterfest Great America

The day after Thanksgiving we usually lounge around and don’t do much of anything. This year, however, we were invited to the WinterFest Media Night at Great America and it was so worth getting out of our pjs. It’s hard to believe that this is only the second year that Great America hosts WinterFest because it’s already got a “holiday tradition” vibe going on.

What is WinterFest?

So what’s the deal with WinterFest and what makes it different than visiting the park any other time of year? Well, on select dates from November 24-December 30, California’s Great America is transformed into a winter wonderland. The park is filled with family-friendly activities guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit. There’s ice skating, twinkling light displays, 25 rides and attractions, carolers, cookie decorating, hot chocolate and even egg nog funnel cakes.

The hours during WinterFest are different too. The park opens in the evening and once the sun goes down you can enjoy the Tree Lighting Ceremony featuring song, dance and a 65-foot-tall tree. It’s pretty spectacular and not just for the kids.

Did we like it?

Yes! My kids were particularly enamored of all the lights on display and the snow that falls every 15 minutes in Hometown Square. We ice skated, we ate, we watched the tree lighting ceremony, we walked around the park, we shopped, we visited rides and we enjoyed strolling around after dark in the company of other people ushering in the holiday season. We headed back home with a HUGE tub of popcorn we bought at the park and big smiles on our faces.
