DIY Magnetic Board out of Canvas Art

DIY Magnetic Canvas Board

I was provided with a gift card that I used to complete this project. All statements and opinions are mine.

Last month I showed you how I made lace spray paint art on canvas using a super easy technique. I was really happy with the results, so much so that I wanted to do a little more with the project.

I recently moved my home office space into what used to be my daughters’ bedroom, they moved into a bigger room. One wall in my new office is painted a shade of Valspar Plink. I’m not gonna lie, I’m not crazy about the color. I mean it’s great for a little girls’ room, but maybe not so much for a grown woman’s office. The thing is that I’m not in the mood to repaint the wall at the moment, so I needed a way to make the Plink look a bit more grown up. Then I realized that the lace spray paint canvas art that I made last month using the Pantone color of the year, Radiant Orchid goes extremely well with the color Plink. Nice!

I wasn’t satisfied with just hanging my lace spray paint canvas on my office wall, though. I wanted it to be more useful, functional, and inspirational. So I turned it into a magnetic board. Perfect for a grown woman’s office. I love it and it was pretty dang easy to do.

To start off with I went to my local Lowe’s and bought a can of Rustoleum Magnetic Primer.
Rustoleum magnetic primerThank goodness I asked someone at the store to help me find it because he made sure to shake it up for me before I headed home. He shook this little can up for five minutes and I’m glad he did because it’s not something that I would have wanted to do on my own. I would have ended up with a sore arm, I’m sure.

Next thing I did was paint the back of my canvas art with four coats of the magnetic primer. The instructions on the primer said that three coats would be sufficient, but I did an extra coat because I was painting from behind a layer of canvas and because I would rather overdo it than underdo it.
Paint the back of a canvas with magnetic primerA couple of notes on the process here:

This primer stinks. If you can, paint outdoors so you don’t stink up your kitchen and piss off your hubby like I did. Also, this is NOT a water-based paint, so you can’t just wash your paint brush off to clean it. I kept my paintbrush in a plastic baggie to keep it moist between coats and when I was done, I disposed of the brush because it wasn’t worth the effort for me to clean it.

While I was at Lowe’s picking up the magnetic primer, I also picked up some ceramic disc magnets to use on my finished masterpiece.

I did not know there was magnetic paint out there. Do you think it would help keep outer space aliens from abducting me? I’m guessing it might mess-up radio reception on your walkie-talkie. I’m still thinking – I will say it’s a good bit of information to keep in the back of my mind.

I would not recommend using magnetic paint on the back of your brain, regardless on its effects on aliens of any kind (including the kind from outer space).

Does the magnetic paint go through to the front of the canvas?

No, the magnetic paint did not soak through the canvas.

I had painted the front of the canvas first, though, so that might have helped.

It did not leak through in my case, but perhaps try a small section first to make sure.
