Fragmented Fridays

Back it up!

It is only a matter of time before something goes horribly wrong with your computer. If you have a PC it could be any number of viruses or trojan horses. If you have a Mac, don’t be smug – you could spill orange juice on your computer and cause all sorts of problems. This is a gentle reminder to backup your files. Do it!

My husband does not backup his files and he got a Trojan horse. Actually, he gets them all the time. Most of the time I’m able to fix the issue for him pretty quickly, but this time I almost gave up. I am not a tech-savy person by any means, but I am stubborn, determined, and on a budget.

I am so grateful for all of the kind souls that share info on how to fix these issues online. Unfortunately, none of the instructions I found were successful. Finally, by accident and a mistake on my part, I was able to find a solution. Woot! Woot! Isn’t that how most “discoveries” happen? I mean Columbus didn’t really “discover” the Americas, he just stumbled upon them on his way somewhere else.

The point is it took me three days, but I did it! Unlike the soldiers of Troy, I was able to defeat this unwanted “gift”. All the effort was worth it because I was able to recover 139 video clips of Put Pie.

The moral of the story: Back it up!!!

I love anyone and anything that makes my life easier. Here are a few examples…

  • When my husband makes pancakes (he does almost all of the cooking) he makes extra and freezes them, that way on mornings when it’s up to me to get breakfast for ready for Put Pie I can just pop some in the toaster.
  • My BIL, who lives with us, watches both girls long enough so that I can take a shower.
  • My wonderful friend, Momo, came for a visit and asked if she could bring dinner. She brought stuffed pork tenderloin, couscous, roasted veggies, and a cake!
  • Kind souls hold doors open for me when they see I’ve got my hands full.

It’s the little things.

And now your Friday Fortune Cookie (don’t forget to add “in bed” at the end, if you are so inclined):

If, if, if! If my aunt had balls she’d be my uncle.

I’m feeling pretty bad ass right now. He’s not allowed to use the computer until he backs up all those videos, though because this one was really tough and I don’t think I could fix one that was any more difficult.

little things do make a big difference. I backup all the time and with external hard drives being relatively cheap it’s not as expensive as it was just a year or so ago. The biggest problem really is remember to do it but many programs out there will remind you. Nice to hear your good words for the mac – but everyone should back up because anything can and will fail at some point.

You are hilarious! I can’t believe I didn’t think of that angle myself. The whole bit could have been a double entendre. Man, I just wasted an opportunity for comic gold.

That’s pretty awesome! A similar thing happened to us the past few days but our issue was spyware (and my BIL fixed it for us.) It kept telling us we had an innumerable amount of viuses. We were convinced a crash was on it’s way so we started backing up. Computers can be as stressful as cars.

I wouldn’t even know where to begin trying to get rid of a virus. You ROCK!

I have Carbonite.com for both my PC and my MAC. It backs up automatically, every time I turn on my computer. It’s $55 a year (I think) and if you accidentally delete something you can get it back easy as pie, up to 10 days later, I do believe. I’m a commercial at the moment, but I honestly don’t even worry about backing up because of this awesome service. My husband had destroyed two computers and was able to get everything back.

Good for you to fix the trojan. My sister’s computer went haywire this week. I know because she sent me “messages” that were links to her sexual experiences. That’s NOT her style! I hope she backed up her computer and gets those nasty messages off of there.
