This weekend my family and I got to see some awesome artwork sin querer queriendo. It was such a happy accident. See we were out and I was so hungry I was starting to get hangry. We were trying to decide where to eat and ended up at our fail-safe family favorite restaurant: Puerto Alegre. We walked in, got a table and took note of all the Frida Khalo inspired artwork on the walls. Cool, I thought, it’s July and July kind of belongs to Frida because she was born on July 6, 1907 and died on July 13, 1954. Turns out that for the next couple of months Puerto Alegre is hosting “El Color y El Dolor: A Frida Inspired Art Show.”
I took a few pictures to give you an idea of what’s on display.

You guys, this portrait of Frida is made out of chicle! Gum! Straight up pop in your mouth chiclet style gum. When I first glanced at it, I thought it was a tapestry. The picture above does not do it justice. It’s WAY better in person.
Then my husband pointed out it is made out of gum and I got flashbacks of buying Canel’s from little kids in Tijuana.
It’s gorgeous and so “OH MY GATOS that’s GUM!” If I could I would totally buy it, but my wallet is like “No se puede.” I guess I’ll have to buy some Canel’s and be satisfied with that.

Frida, 2014 by Eric Almanza
This portrait of Frida looked down at us as we ate, not with disdain, but with what appears to be sincere pain.
Frida Now by Francisco Franco
One can only imagine that this is what Frida looks like now, I suppose.

The show was curated by Francisco Franco.
Remember it runs for a couple of months so if you’re in San Francisco and ya love Frida, get your Frida-lovin’ pompis down to Puerto Alegre in the Mission before the end of August or you’ll miss it. If you’re not in San Francisco, bummer for you, but you can click on the links above to check out the artists who made these particular pieces.

It was such a nice surprise to walk in and see such great pieces and there are so many more that I didn’t photograph because I didn’t want to bother people who were eating.

What an awesome show! I would have sworn black and blue that the first portrait was a tapestry! I can’t believe that it’s gum!
Claudya Martinez says
Oh, me too. I thought it was done with some kind of wide plastic ribbon kind of thing. It’s truly wonderful.
