After my recent trip to LA, I came back inspired to create my very first Día de los Muertos altar. Day of the Dead is something that I’ve always appreciated aesthetically, but (although I am of Mexican descent) we never celebrated the holiday when I was growing up. Maybe it’s because it also happened to be my grandmother’s birthday.
This year, I’m going for it and even made my own papel picado banner. I know I’m a novice, but I LOVE how it turned out. My banner consists of skulls and owls.
I made the skull template myself, it wasn’t very hard even though my drawing skills are rudimentary at best.
I downloaded the papel picado owl template because I just couldn’t resist its cuteness.
I can’t wait to show you the rest of my altar as soon as it’s done. I have to say I am really enjoying the process and dedicating time to remembering loved ones that have passed. It somehow makes me feel like we are bonding and I also get to tell my daughters about beautiful human beings they never had the pleasure of meeting.
If you’d like to make your own, follow the link for an easy papel picado tutorial. Before you leave, be sure to tell me what you think of mine…be kind, it’s my first.

Sounds interesting!
I guess just the fact that you can all get together and participate in making these is a wonderful idea and great way to bond with your family. And with Halloween just round the corner, these seem perfect. :)Thanks for sharing. 🙂

You should be proud – that is one fine banner.

Are owls part of the Day of the Dead celebrations?
I like the skull. Looks like hearts for eyes.

Owls, part of the celebration? They are now. The eyes on the skull are indeed hearts, thank you for noticing.

Beautiful banner and beautiful sentiment. I’m 2nd gen Mexican and we didn’t celebrate DofD either until a few years ago when I read about how other cultures, especially the indigenous people of Mexico and Native Americans viewed death: as a transition into another world.
We can honor and celebrate those that have gone before us as well as teaching our children and others about their ancestors.

Hi! How are you? I’ve been a bad blight buddy. The kids and the start if preschool for Put Pie have me super busy.
I’m really excited about celebrating DofD, it’s already provided awesome binding experiences for the whole household.
