The building we live in was built in the 1800s and like many old homes in San Francisco, it has a non-functioning fireplace. The fireplace was sealed up a long time ago and is now strictly ornamental. We used to fill it up with candles and enjoy their glow, but now that we have kids open flames aren’t such a great idea. For the most part the fireplace has just sat there empty, but this weekend my husband decided to turn it into a “living” fireplace by filling it up with plants.
I have to say I really like it. It lights up the room in a different way. Maybe I’ll find a way to put a little shelf in there and add more plants.

We did the same in Sydney – it was a funny trend back then. We have one that works and 2 that don’t and one that was taken out completely.
