My soon to be 5-year-old has been decoding a message for a couple of days. It’s from one of her activity books and there is a phrase that she has to figure out by turning numbers into corresponding letters. The message is alarmingly religious to her secular parents, but that’s not the point of this story.
The point is that although she had been doing this project diligently on her own, she got frustrated and really wanted to find a way to finish faster, which led to us having the following conversation.
Put Pie: Is there a way to do this faster? I really want to finish.
Unknown Mami: Nope, you just have to keep doing it.
Put Pie: Ohhhh, but I really want to finish faster.
Unknown Mami: I’m sorry, honey, there are no shortcuts in life.
Put Pie: Yes there is and I can show you!!!
I started laughing hysterically because she is of course referring to shortcuts that can be taken when driving or walking from one place to another and I guess she’s totally right, there are shortcuts in life.
Note to self: When did I start sounding like an old fuddy duddy saying things like, there are no shortcuts in life?
That’s really cute! Can’t outsmart kids these days….
I’m still stunned that put-pie is 5. You do realize she is brilliant??
Well, that compliment is just music to this mother’s ears.
Did you see that “report” that says, we start turning into our parents about age 30?
Shortcuts can be good and bad depending on what they involve. Sometimes the longer path is more enjoyable.
Life’s all about decoding messages, isn’t it. 🙂
superb. we can learn so much from our children! Xx
